Robert Bork was an American judge, government official, and legal scholar. A Republican, he was Solicitor General of the U.S., from March 21, 1973 to January 20, 1977, (Acting) U.S. Attorney General, from October 20, 1973 to January 4, 1974, and Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, from February 9, 1982 to February 5, 1988.

Robert was the son of Elisabeth Mildred (Kunkle), a schoolteacher, and Harry Philip Bork, Jr., a steel company purchasing agent. He was married to Claire Davidson, until her death, and then to Mary Ellen Pohl, until his death. Robert had three children with Claire, including human rights activist Ellen Bork.

Raised a Presbyterian, Robert converted to Catholicism while married to his second wife. His first wife was Jewish and his second wife was a former Roman Catholic nun.

Robert’s paternal grandfather was Harry Philip Bork (the son of Jost Henrich/Henry Bork and Eliza Schwartz). Robert’s grandfather Harry was born in Pennsylvania. Jost was the son of German parents, from Hessen-Nassau, Prussia, John Adam Bork, who was born in Besse, and Anna Katharine Koehler.

Robert’s paternal grandmother was Sarah M. Heron (the daughter of James Heron and Isabella Clark). Sarah was born in Pennsylvania. James was Irish, and was the son of Thomas Heron and Sarah Miller. Isabella was the daughter of Irish parents, James R. Clark and Catherine McMullen.

Robert’s maternal grandfather was Walter Alexander Kunkle (the son of Samuel Kunkle and Sarah Elizabeth Wolf). Walter was born in Pennsylvania. Samuel was the son of John Kunkle and Mariah Cockley. Sarah was the daughter of Moses Wolfe and Nancy Smith.

Robert’s maternal grandmother was Mary Rebecca Baughman (the daughter of Robert Sturgeon Baughman and Abigail Ann Space). Mary was born in Pennsylvania. Robert’s great-grandfather Robert was the son of John Baughman and Rebecca Stewart. Abigail was the daughter of Allen Space and Mary Ann “Polly” Mercer.
