Rafael Alberti was a Spanish artist. He was a member of the Generation of ’27. He is considered one of the greatest literary figures of the Silver Age of Spanish Literature.
Rafael was the son of María Merello y Gómez Rull and Agustín Vicente Alberti Sánchez Bustamante. They were first cousins, once removed. He was married to writer, activist, and cultural ambassador María Teresa León, until her death.
Rafael’s paternal grandfather was Carlos Alberti y Ravina (the son of Agustín Alberti y Braseti and María Catalina Ravina y Ronco). Agustín was the son of Guiseppe Alberti and Caterina Braseti. María Catalina was the daughter of Tommaso Ravina Bossa, who was born in Genoa, Genoa, Liguria, Italy, and of Nicolina Ronco.
Rafael’s paternal grandmother was named Josefa de Sánchez-Bustamante.
Rafael’s maternal grandfather was Agustín Merello Alberti (the son of Juan/Julio Vicente Merello Cerisola/Cherisola and Catalina Alberti Ravina). Juan was born in Sestri Levante, Genoa, Liguria, Italy, the son of Domenico Merello and Giulia Cerisola. Catalina was the daughter of Agustín Alberti y Braseti and María Catalina Ravina y Ronco.
Rafael’s maternal grandmother was María Gómez Rull (the daughter of Nicolás Gómez González and María de los Dolores Rull Castaños). Nicolás was born in Ayamonte, Huelva, Andalusia, Spain. Rafael’s great-grandmother María de los Dolores was the daughter of Francisco de Paula Rull Romero and María de los Dolores Castaños Márquez, who were from Sevilla, Andalusia.
