She was born in Mie Prefecture, Japan, to an American father, who worked for the U.S. State Department, and a Japanese mother. Her family lived in Turkey, China, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the U.S. Her first language is Japanese.

Mitski’s paternal grandfather was Frederick Davis Laycock (the son of Frederick Ellenwood Laycock and Adeline Irma Newcomb). Mitski’s grandfather Frederick was born in Stoneham, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Mitski’s great-grandfather Frederick was the son of Charles Henry Laycock, whose parents were English, and of Florence E. Page. Adeline was the daughter of Davis Willard Newcomb and Marie Lizette Pierce.

Mitski’s paternal grandmother was Linda Helen Ruest (the daughter of Ernest E. Ruest and Mary Rose Perry). Linda was born in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. Ernest was the son of French-Canadian parents, Joseph Octave Ruest and Marie-Anne Voyer. Mitski’s great-grandmother Mary was the daughter of Portuguese parents, Manuel Perry and Rose Mary Silva.
