Mary Gay Scanlon is an American attorney and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, she has been a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania, since November 13, 2018.

She is the daughter of Carol and Daniel J. Scanlon, who was an attorney and magistrate. She was raised in Watertown, New York. Mary is married to Mark Stewart, with whom she has three children.

Mary’s paternal grandfather was Daniel Joseph Scanlon (the son of John Daniel Scanlon and Grace Cecelia Horan). John was prominent in Democratic Party politics. He was the son of Irish parents, Daniel Scanlon and Mary Gallivan. Grace was also the daughter of Irish parents, Daniel Horan and Johanna Gooley.

Mary’s paternal grandmother was Mary Rose Gaynor/Gagnon (the daughter of Edward F. Gaynor and Margaret Virginia McDonald). Edward was the son of Irish parents, Patrick Gaynor and Honora Dooly. Margaret was also the daughter of Irish parents, James McDonnell and Johanna Doyle.

Mary’s maternal grandfather was Leonard John “Leo” Yehle (the son of John Baptiste Yehle and Clara Schlachter). Leo was a family-court judge, who helped write the first juvenile justice code in New York. His parents were German.

Mary’s maternal grandmother was Dorothea Markham Smith (the daughter of Arthur Tappan/Tappen Smith and Florence Nightingale Markham). Dorothea was born in New York, and had deep roots in the state. Arthur was editor and publisher of the Herkimer Citizen, in NY. He was the son of Frederick Smith and Maria E. Service. Florence was the daughter of The Rev. Wilbur Francis Markham and M. Anna Phillips.
