Mark Ruffalo is an American actor, filmmaker, director, humanitarian, producer, and social activist. His roles include Bruce Banner / Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly The Avengers films and the She-Hulk series. He has also featured in the films The Dentist, You Can Count on Me, In the Cut, 13 Going on 30, Just Like Heaven, Zodiac, Shutter Island, The Kids Are All Right, Foxcatcher, Infinitely Polar Bear, Spotlight, Dark Waters (2019), and Poor Things, and on television’s The Normal Heart and I Know This Much Is True. He also co-wrote the film The Destiny of Marty Fine, and directed the film Sympathy for Delicious, both of which he appeared in.
Mark is the son of Marie Rose, a hairdresser and stylist, and Frank Lawrence Ruffalo, a construction painter. His family moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, during his early teen years, and later to San Diego, California, and Los Angeles. His father is of Italian ancestry. His maternal grandfather was of French/French-Canadian descent, and his maternal grandmother was of Italian descent.
Mark is married to Sunrise Coigney, with whom he has three children.
Mark’s paternal grandfather was Frank Donald Ruffalo (the son of Filberto/Albert Ruffalo and Carmella/Carmela R. Bartucci). Frank was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to Italian parents, from Girifalco, Province of Catanzaro, Calabria. Carmella was the daughter of James Bartucci.
Mark’s paternal grandmother was Mary F. Bisciglia (the daughter of Francesco/Frank Bisciglia and Catherine Meo). Mark’s grandmother Mary was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to Italian parents, from Calabria. Francesco was born in Cosenza, the son of Vito Bisciglia. Mark’s great-grandmother Catherine was born in Roccabernarda, Crotone, the daughter of Santo Meo and Dominica Andreola.

Mark’s maternal grandmother was Yolanda Piccolo (the daughter of Arthur Piccolo and Carmella/Carmela M. Constanti). Yolanda was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to Italian parents. Arthur was born in Acerra, Province of Naples, Campania. Carmella was the daughter of Vincenzo James Constanti/di Costanzo and Christina Marie Di Luca/deLucca, who were also from Acerra.
Mark has described his great-grandfather Arthur Piccolo as a “Neapolitan actor and singer.”
