Mario was born to a Peruvian middle class family. He is the son of Mario Testino, who is of Italian ancestry, with roots in Lavagna, Genoa, Liguria, and Maria Teresa Silva, who has Spanish and Irish ancestry. In 1982, Mario moved permanently to London, U.K.
