Mackenzie Bowell was an English-born Canadian newspaper publisher and politician. A member of the Conservative Party, he served as the fifth Prime Minister of Canada, from December 21, 1894 to April 27, 1896. He was also a Member of Parliament for Hastings North (ON), from September 20, 1867 to December 1892, and a Canadian Senator from Québec, from December 1892 to December 10, 1917. He was the owner and proprietor of the newspaper the Belleville Intelligencer.

Prime Minister Bowell was born in Rickinghall, Suffolk, England, the son of Elizabeth Ann (Marshall) and John Bowell. His family moved to Belleville, Upper Canada, in 1832. He was married to Harriet (Moore) Bowell, until her death, with whom he had nine children.

Prime Minister Bowell’s paternal grandfather was named John Bowell.

Prime Minister Bowell’s paternal grandmother was named Ann Peters.

Prime Minister Bowell’s maternal grandfather was named John Marshall.
