I don’t know which document to consider reliable. Passenger list says German for Pauline and her children (John was already in US). 1920 census has widowed Pauline in her brother’s (I guess, they have different last names, but it says she’s his sister) household and it says they’re Russian. 1930 and 1940 census says that Henry was born in New Jersey, but that’s not true. 1930 census also says his parents were from Germany. Karschinski obviously isn’t a German name. According to the passenger list, Pauline’s father is named Jankel, which is Yiddish, I think. In conclusion, I don’t know.

Lance’s maternal grandfather name Henry H. Werner doesn’t sound like Latvian. So he might have been Baltic German, not Latvian. Is there any further information regarding him?
