Jack Reed is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been a U.S. Senator from Rhode Island, since January 3, 1997. He was previously a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Rhode Island, from January 3, 1991 to January 3, 1997.

Jack is the son of Mary Louise (Monahan) and Joseph Anthony Reed. He is married to Senate staffer Julia Hart, with whom he has a daughter.

Jack’s paternal grandfather was Edwin Joseph Reed (the son of Edwin Reed and Mary Elizabeth McKenna). Jack’s grandfather Edwin was born in Rhode Island. Jack’s great-grandfather Edwin was the son of Hugh Maxwell Reed and Sophia Catherine Lawrence, who had deep roots in Massachusetts, with English ancestry. Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of William McKenna and Ann, and was of Irish origin.

Jack’s paternal grandmother was Kathryn/Catherine Gertrude Byrne (the daughter of Martin Byrne and Ellen Tully). Kathryn was born in Rhode Island, to Irish parents.
