Hassanal Bolkiah has been Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, since 5 October, 1967, and Prime Minister of Brunei Darussalam, since 1 January, 1984. He has also been Minister of Finance, since 23 February, 1997, and, previously, from 1 January, 1984 to 20 October, 1986, Minister of Defence and Commander-in-Chief of Royal Brunei Armed Forces, since 7 September, 1986, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, since 22 October, 2015.

He is the son of Omar Ali Saifuddien III, who was the 28th Sultan of Brunei, from 4 June, 1950 to 5 October, 1967, and of Pengiran Anak Damit. He is married to Pengiran Anak Saleha. He was previously married to Hajah Mariam and Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim. Hassanal has twelve children from his wives.

Hassanal’s paternal grandfather was Muhammad Jamalul Alam II (the son of Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam Aqamaddin ibni al-Marhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II, and of Pengiran Isteri Fatimah Raden Betawi). Hassanal’s grandfather Muhammad was born in Istana Kampong Ayer, Bandar Brunei, Brunei, and was Sultan of Brunei, from 10 May, 1906 to 11 September, 1924. Hassanal’s great-grandfather Hashim was Sultan of Bronei, from 30 May, 1885 to 10 May, 1906. He was the son of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II ibni Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam I, who was Sultan of Brunei, from 1829 to 1852; and of Dayang Tuan Zaidah Pengarah Digadong Tuan Laman. Hassanal’s great-grandmother Isteri was the daughter of Radin Hj Othman Radin Hj Abd Momin, and of Tuan Aishah Pehin Khatib Hj. Awg. Abd. Latif.

Hassanal’s paternal grandmother was Raja Isteri Pg Anak Siti Fatimah Pg Tua Omarali (the daughter of Pengiran Tua Omar Ali Pg Pemancha Pg Anak Muhammad Salleh I, and of Pengiran Babu Raja Pengiran Anak Tengah Pengiran Maharaja Lela Pengiran anak Abdul Kahar). Hassanal’s great-grandfather Tua was the son of Pg Pemancha Anak Muhammad Salleh I Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II, and of Kawang Kumala Indera. Hassanal’s great-grandmother Babu was the daughter of Pengiran Maharajalela Sahibul Kahar Pengiran Anak Abd Kahar Pengiran Kerma Indera Pengiran Anak Bahar, and of Pengiran Anak Siti Mariam Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II.

Hassanal’s maternal grandfather was Pg Bendahara Pg Anak Abdul Rahman Pg Bendahara Omar Ali Junied (the son of Pengiran Muda Besar Omar Ali Saifuddin Omar Ali Junied ibni Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam Aqamaddin, and of Pg Anak Siti Khatijah bt Pengiran Muda Besar Muhammad Jamalul Alam). Hassanal’s great-grandfather Muda was the son of Sultan Hashim Jalilul Alam Aqamaddin ibni al-Marhum Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II, and of Pg Chendera Kesuma Pangiran Negara Indira. Hassanal’s great-grandmother Anak was the daughter of Pengiran Muda Besar Muhammad Jamalul Alam bin Pengiran di-Gadong Anak Muhammad Tajuddin, and of Pg Anak Saleha Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Ii.

Hassanal’s maternal grandmother was Dayang Fatimah Isteri Fatimah Y.M. Radin Hj Hassan (the daughter of Radin Hj Hassan, and of Hajah/Hajjah Zainab). Hassanal’s great-grandfather Radin Hj was the son of Pehin Siraja Khatib Radin Haji Mohd Daud bin Radin Haji Othman, and of Hjh Saleha. Hassanal’s great-grandmother Hajah was the daughter of Pehin Dato Perdana Manteri Syeikh Radin Haji Abdul Rahman Radin Haji Othman, and of Siti Aminah.
