Grant Wood was an American painter. He is particularly known for his painting American Gothic (1930), depicting a farmer and his daughter, and for other depictions of the rural American Midwest.

Grant was the son of Hattie DeEtte (Weaver) and Francis Maryville Wood. He was raised partly in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His sister was artist and art teacher Nan Wood Graham, who is the woman depicted in American Gothic.

Grant’s paternal grandfather was named Joseph Wood. Joseph was born in Virginia.

Grant’s paternal grandmother was named Rebecca L. Shepherd. Rebecca was born in Virginia.

Grant’s maternal grandfather was Devolson Weaver (the son of Lodowick Weaver, Jr. and Matilda Weaver). Devolson was born in New York. Lodowick was the son of Lodowick Weaver and Mary “Polly” Brown. Matilda was the daughter of Joshua Weaver and Anna Davis.
