George Washington was the First President of the United States, serving from April 30, 1789 to March 4, 1797. He was elected to the position in 1789 and 1792. He was also a Founding Father of the United States, the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, from June 15, 1775 to December 23, 1783, and a Senior Officer of the Army, from July 13, 1798 to December 14, 1799, his death.

He is the only U.S. President not to have lived past the 18th century.

President Washington was the son of Mary (Ball) and Augustine Washington. He was married to Martha (Dandridge) Washington, until his death. He adopted and raised several of her relatives, including her granddaughter, Eleanor Parke Custis Lewis. Eleanor was the maternal great-great-great-great-grandmother of actor Billy Campbell.

President Washington’s paternal grandfather was Lawrence Washington (the son of John Washington and Anne Pope). Lawrence was born in Westmoreland Co., Virginia. John was born in Purleigh, Essex, England, the son of The Rev. Lawrence Washington and Amphyllis Twigden. Anne was the daughter of English parents, Nathaniel Pope and Lucy.

President Washington’s paternal grandmother was Mildred Warner (the daughter of Augustine Warner II and Mildred/Margaret Reade). President Washington’s grandmother Mildred was born in Virginia. Augustine Warner was the 15th Speaker of the Virginia House of Burgesses. He was born in Virginia, to English parents, Augustine Warner and Mary Townley/Towneley, who was from Stone Edge, Lancashire. President Washington’s great-grandmother Mildred was born in Virginia, the daughter of George Reade, who was English, from Linkenholt, Hampshire, and was Secretary of the Colony, and Acting Governor of Virginia; and of Elizabeth Martiau, whose father, Nicholas Martiau, was likely born in Île de Ré, France.

President Washington’s maternal grandfather was Joseph Ball (the son of William Ball and Hannah Atherold). Joseph was English, from Barkham, Berkshire. Hannah was the daughter of Thomas Atherold and Mary Vesey.

President Washington’s maternal grandmother was named Mary, likely Mary Bennett. Mary was born in West Chester, England.

President George Washington has Welsh ancestry. Griffith Henry 1514-1558 was born in Wales (Washington’s 6th great grandfather). I also believe he has Irish heritage since his 8th time great grandparents Edmund Butler and Catherine Forstall were born in Ireland.
