Fritz Hollings, also known by his birth name Ernest Hollings, was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina, from January 18, 1955 to January 20, 1959, Governor of South Carolina, from January 20, 1959 to January 15, 1963, and a U.S. Senator from South Carolina, from November 9, 1966 to January 3, 2005.
He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1984.
Fritz was the son of Wilhelmine Dorothea/Dorothy (Meyer) and Adolph Gevert Hollings. Fritz was married to Rita Liddy, until her death. He had six children with his former wife, Martha Patricia Salley.
