Fritz Hollings, also known by his birth name Ernest Hollings, was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he was Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina, from January 18, 1955 to January 20, 1959, Governor of South Carolina, from January 20, 1959 to January 15, 1963, and a U.S. Senator from South Carolina, from November 9, 1966 to January 3, 2005.

He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1984.

Fritz was the son of Wilhelmine Dorothea/Dorothy (Meyer) and Adolph Gevert Hollings. Fritz was married to Rita Liddy, until her death. He had six children with his former wife, Martha Patricia Salley.

Fritz’s paternal grandfather was Adolph Frederick D. Hollings (the son of Behrend H. Hollings and Catherine Carstens). Adolph was born in Germany or in South Carolina, to German parents.

Fritz’s paternal grandmother was Anna R. Dorothea/Dorthea Hollings (the daughter of John Henry Hollings and D. Doscher). Anna was born in South Carolina.

Fritz’s maternal grandfather was named J. D. E. Meyer. J. D. E. was born in South Carolina.
