Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. Edmund and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa mountaineer, became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, on 29 May, 1953. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. Edmund was New Zealand’s High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh, and Ambassador to Nepal, all, from 1985 to 1988.

Edmund was the son of Gertrude and Percival Augustus Hillary. His father had served in Gallipoli with the 15th (North Auckland) Regiment. He was married to Louise Mary Rose, until her death, and then to June Mulgrew, until his death. He had three children, including mountaineer, philanthropist, and writer Peter Hillary, with Louise. June was the widow of his close friend, mountaineer Peter Mulgrew. Both Edmund’s first wife and June’s husband Peter had died in plane crashes in the 1970s.

Edmund’s paternal grandfather was Edmund Raymond Hillary (the son of John Hillary and Anne Ingham). Edmund’s grandfather Edmund was born in Staley Bridge, Lancashire, and was a watchmaker.

Edmund’s paternal grandmother was Annie Clementia Fleming (the daughter of John Fleming and Emma Margaret Hampton). Annie was born in Condra, Clondrohid, County Cork, Ireland. John was the son of William Fleming and Margaret Booth. Emma was the daughter of William Hampton.

Edmund’s maternal grandfather was George Clark (the son of Charles Clark and Dinah Jowett). George was born in Nelson, Nelson City, Nelson, New Zealand, to English parents. Charles was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, the son of John Charles Clark and Phoebe Rose. Dinah was born in Pudsey, Yorkshire, the daughter of John Jowett and Nancy Sharp.

Edmund’s maternal grandmother was Harriet Wooderson (the daughter of Henry Wooderson and Susannah Hopkins). Harriet was the daughter of English parents. Henry was born in Easthampstead, Berkshire, the son of James Wooderson and Phoebe. Susannah was born in West Drayton, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of James Hopkins and Ann.
