Charlie Sanders was an American professional football player. He was a tight end for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). Charlie was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007.

He was the son of Peteacher and Nathan Hampton Sanders. He was married to Georgianna, with whom he had nine children, including professional boxer Mary Jo Sanders and professional football player Charlie Sanders, Jr.

Charlie’s paternal grandfather was Clarence Lee Sanders (the son of James Basden Sanders and Mary Exline Rhodes). Mary was born in Onslow, North Carolina, the daughter of Lewis Rhodes and Esther.

Charlie’s paternal grandmother was Henrietta Hezikah Humphrey (the daughter of Pearl Jackson Humphrey and Mary Eliza Basden). Pearl was the son of Lewis Humphrey and Amanda Mills. Mary was the daughter of Daniel Allen Williams and Mary Louisa Basden.

Charlie’s maternal grandfather was Charlie Toodle (the son of Clarence Toodle and Betsy Duffy). Clarence was born in North Carolina, the son of Sipp Toodle and Clara Foye.

Charlie’s maternal grandmother was Celia Ann Thompson (the daughter of Joseph Thompson and Sarah Petteway). Sarah was the daughter of George Washington Petteway and Celia Ann White.
