Charles Addams was an American cartoonist. He created The Addams Family, and was known for his macabre and darkly comedic style. He was also billed as Chas Addams.

Charles was the son of Grace M. (Spear) and Charles Huey Addams, a piano company executive. He was married to Marilyn Matthews “Tee” Miller, until his death.

He was a first cousin, twice removed, of social reformer Jane Addams, through his great-great-grandparents Samuel Addams and Catherine Huy.

Charles’ paternal grandfather was Samuel H. Addams (the son of Charles Huey/Huy Addams and Hannah Hain). Samuel was born in Pennsylvania, and was of mostly German and Swiss-German descent, with smaller amounts of English and Dutch. Charles was the son of Samuel Addams and Catherine Huy. Hannah was the daughter of William Hain and Anne/Anna Hain.

Charles’ paternal grandmother was Catherine/Kate A. Reinhold (the daughter of John Reinhold and Leah Bollinger Royer). Catherine was born in Pennsylvania, and was of German and Swiss-German ancestry. John was the son of Heinrich Reinhold and Susanna Conrad. Leah was the daughter of Jacob Kemper Royer and Susanna Bollinger.

Charles’ maternal grandfather was Howard Spear (the son of William Spear and Jane Dusenburg/Dusenberry/Dusonbuy). Howard was born in New York.

Charles’ maternal grandmother was Emma Louise Tufts (the daughter of Heinrich/Henry Putnam Tufts and Hannah Maria/W. Norton). Emma was born in New Jersey, and was of Colonial American (English) descent. Heinrich was the son of John Tufts and Abigail Wheeler. Hannah was the daughter of Benjamin Norton and Judith Giddings.
