Carlos Menem was an Argentinian politician and lawyer. He served as President of Argentina, from 8 July, 1989 to 10 December, 1999, and National Senator, from 10 December, 2005 to 14 February, 2021, his death. He was previously Governor of La Rioja, from 25 May, 1973 to 24 March, 1976, and again, from 10 December, 1983 to 8 July, 1989, and President of the Justicialist Party, from 10 August, 1990 to 13 June, 2001, and again, from 28 November, 2001 to 11 June, 2003.

President Menem was the son of Mohibe (Akil) and Saúl Menem. His parents were Syrian emigrants, from Yabroud, Syria. President Menem was raised a Sunni Muslim. He converted to Roman Catholicism later in life. His brother, Eduardo Menem, was also a politician, who was a Senator from La Rioja Province, from 10 December, 1983 to 9 December, 2005.

President Menem had four children, including two with his former wife Zulema Yoma; and a son with his former wife, actress, television host, and beauty queen Cecilia Bolocco, who was Miss Chile and Miss Universe 1987.
