Carles Puigdemont is a politician and journalist. He has been a Member of the European Parliament for Spain, since 2 July, 2019, and President of the Council for the Republic, since 8 December, 2018. He previously served as President of the Government of Catalonia, from 12 January, 2016 to 27 October, 2017. He has also been a Member of the Parliament of Catalonia, from 10 November, 2006 to 27 October, 2017, and again, from 17 January, 2018 to 30 July, 2018; and Mayor of Girona, from 1 July, 2011 to 11 January, 2016.

He is the son of Xavier Puigdemont i Oliveras and Núria Casamajó i Ruiz. He is married to Romanian journalist Marcela Topor, with whom he has two children.

Carles’ patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his seventh great-grandfather, Paulí Puigdemont.

Carles’ great-grandfather Francesc was the son of Joaquim Josep Jaume Puigdemont i Llach (or Joaquín José Jaime Puigdemont Llach in Spanish) and Francesca Margarida Magdalena Puigdemont i Rius (or Francisca Margarita Magdalena Puigdemont Ríus in Spanish). Carles’ great-grandmother Rosa was the daughter of Esteve Benet Paulí Padrosa i Boada (or Esteban Benedicto Paulino Padrosa Boada in Spanish) and Anna Antònia Margarida Oliveras i Muriscot (or Ana Antonia Margarita Oliveras Muriscot in Spanish).

Carles’ maternal grandmother was Manuela Ruiz Toledo (the daughter of José Ruiz Valdivia and Joaquina Toledo Valero). Manuela was Andalusian, from La Carolina, Jaén. José was the son of Gabriel Ruiz and Rosalía Valdivia. Joaquina was the daughter of Francisco Toledo and Margarita Valero.

    He was removed by the Spanish government due to Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution that dissolves the parliament.
