James Marsters is an American actor, musician, and comic book writer. He is known for playing Spike on the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, and has also appeared on the shows Smallville, Torchwood, Caprica, and Runaways.
He is the son of Margaret and James Marsters, a United Methodist minister. James was raised in Modesto, California. He has a son with his former wife Liane Davidson.
He has stated:
[My ancestry is] English, Irish, German, French and quite a good bit of Scottish from the Buchanan clan. My family Marsters is in the book of Domesday and helped Norman conquer in 1066 – we were good at something so they called us Masters and gave us a good castle and some sheep and stuff.
James’s paternal grandfather was Lyman Sumner Masters (the son of Elias Sumner Marsters and Maria Jane Robe). Lyman was born in Oregon. Elias was the son of Charles Bonner Marsters and Catherine Thornburg. Maria Jane was the daughter of The Rev. Robert Robe and Eliza Ann Walker.
James’s paternal grandmother was Delma “Daisy” Wileman/Wahl (the daughter of William Philip Wahl and Daisy Smith). Delma was born in Oregon. James’s great-grandmother Daisy was the daughter of Thomas Flemming Smith and Martha Jane Patton.
James’s maternal grandfather was Edward Neill Raymond (the son of Frederick Nathaniel Raymond). Edward was born in Texas. Frederick was the son of Edward Burleson Raymond and Juanita/Juana Rodriguez, who was of Mexican heritage, with roots in Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
James’ maternal grandmother was Cecilia Calvert Barstow Robb (the daughter of Charles Spittal Robb and Susan Gay Estill). Cecilia was born in West Virginia. Charles was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Cecilia Spittal. Susan was the daughter of John Floyd Estill and Lucy D.
