Yuri Gagarin was a Russian Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, a major milestone in the Space Race. His capsule, Vostok 1, completed one orbit of Earth on 12 April, 1961. He was awarded Hero of the Soviet Union, the nation’s highest honour.

Yuri was the son of Anna Timofeyevna, a dairy farmer, and Alexey Ivanovich Gagarin, a carpenter. His parents worked on a collective farm. He was married to Valentina Ivanovna Goryacheva, a medical technician, until his death. The couple had two children, art historian Yelena Gagarina and professor Galina Gagarina.

Yuri’s paternal grandfather was named Ivan Fyodorovich Gagarin (the son of Fydor/Fiodor Petrovich Gagarin and Epestemeya Nikolayevna). Ivan was born in Bushnevo, Kostroma, Russia. Fydor was the son of Piotr Gagarin. Epestemeya was the daughter of Nikolay.

Yuri’s paternal grandmother was named Anastasia/Anastassia Stepanovna Mihaylova/Michailova (the daughter of Stepan Mihaylov/Michailov).

Yuri’s maternal grandfather was named Timofey Matveyevich Matveyev (the son of Matvey Yegorov Matveyev). Matvey was the son of Yegor Matveyev.

Yuri’s maternal grandmother was named Anna Egorovna Ivanova (the daughter of Egor Ivanov). Anna was born in Lukyantsevo.
