The Ethiopian American singer was born in Ethiopia but grew up in the States. As a young child she starred in musicals such as Annie and Damn Yankees.
In her college years, she won the Miss Black Unity of the University of Maryland in 1995. She graduated University to find her profession as a writer in the White House for the Clinton Administration. However the pull to realize her musical aspirations was too strong.
Her main influences include Stevie Wonder, Minnie Riperton, Billie Holiday and Donny Hathaway.
