Vigdís Finnbogadóttir is an Icelandic politician. She served as the fourth President of Iceland, from 1 August, 1980 to 1 August, 1996. She was Iceland’s, and Europe’s, first female president.

She is the daughter of Finnbogi Rútur Þorvaldsson and Sigríður Eiríksdóttir. She was married to Ragnar Ottó Arinbjarnar.

Vigdís’ patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her seventh great-grandfather, Ólafur Arason.

Vigdís’ paternal grandfather was Þorvaldur Jakobsson (the son of Jakob Finnbogason and Þuríður Þorvaldsdóttir). Jakob was the son of Finnbogi Björnsson and Arndís Teitsdóttir. Þuríður was the daughter of Þorvaldur Böðvarsson and Kristín Björnsdóttir.

Vigdís’ paternal grandmother was Magdalena Jónasdóttir (the daughter of Jónas Jónsson and Katrín Bergsdóttir). Jónas was the son of Jón Jónsson Hjaltalín and Kristín Eyjólfsdóttir. Katrín was the daughter of Bergur Búason and Kristín Sturlaugsdóttir.

Vigdís’ maternal grandfather was Eiríkur Guðmundsson (the son of Guðmundur Einarsson and Vigdís Eiríksdóttir). Guðmundur was the son of Einar Gíslason and Margrét Hafliðadóttir. Vigdís’ great-grandmother Vigdís was the daughter of Eiríkur Hafliðason and Helga Þorleifsdóttir.

Vigdís’ maternal grandmother was Vilborg Guðnadóttir (the daughter of Guðni Guðnason and Ástríður Finnsdóttir). Guðni was the son of Guðni Gíslason and Vilborg Guðmundsdóttir. Ástríður was the daughter of Finnur Finnsson and Ingveldur Jónsdóttir.

Vigdís’ matrilineal ancestry can be traced back to her third great-grandmother, Þórný Snorradóttir.
