Birth Name: Thomas Joseph Welling

Place of Birth: Putnam Valley, New York, U.S.

Date of Birth: April 26, 1977

*75% German

Tom Welling is an American actor, model, director, and producer. He is known for his portrayal of Clark Kent in the television series Smallville. His films include Cheaper by the Dozen, its sequel, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, and the 2005 remake of The Fog. Tom’s brother, Mark Welling, is also an actor.

Tom’s paternal grandfather was Louis Harry Welling (the son of Bernard Heinrich Welling and Johanna Kluempka/Klumke). Louis was born in Illinois. Bernard was born in Lingen, Germany, the son of Johann/John Heinrich/Henry Welling and Euphemia Maria Maier. Johanna was born in Hanover, Germany, to Herman Kelumpke and Carolina Kotmann.

Tom’s paternal grandmother was Leora M. “Lee” Poelker (the daughter of Joseph Henry Poelker and Anne Bernadine/Bernadina Petermeyer). Leora was born in Illinois. Joseph was the son of Bernard “Ben” Peter Poelker and Louise Marie/Mary Scheveling. Anne was the daughter of Joseph G./C. Petermeyer and Caroline Kreiter.

Tom’s maternal grandfather was Joseph William Meitz (the son of Joseph Meitz and Mary Wolf). Tom’s grandfather Joseph was born in Missouri. Mary was the daughter of John Wolf.

Tom’s maternal grandmother was Geraldine A. Byington (the daughter of Claude Cole Byington and Angela Ellen Sullivan). Geraldine was born in Missouri. Claude was the son of Arzell/Arzel Byington and Mallisa/Melissa Josephine Mackley. Angela was born in Missouri, the daughter of Timothy Sullivan, who was Irish, and of Margarette/Maggie, who was born in Missouri, to Irish parents.

Tom’s paternal great-great-grandparents, Johann Heinrich Welling and Euphemia Maria Maier, were also the maternal grandparents of a man named Henry W. Peters. Henry was possibly the paternal great-grandfather of actor Evan Peters. If that is the case, then Tom and Evan are third cousins, once removed.

Something Swiss about his eye shape and forehead.

crunty March 24, 2016 at 2:32 pm

Welling is an anglo-saxon or germanic patronymic name, so his ancestry could include German, Dutch or English forebears.

follers March 25, 2016 at 12:18 am

Are you serious?

crunty March 25, 2016 at 12:42 pm

Welling is a place name in Kent. Anglosaxon patronymic names ending -ing are common throughout England, Netherlands and Germany. There is Dorking, Sonning, Barking etc, in England. So…Yes, I am serious.

follers March 25, 2016 at 12:48 pm

No, the point is that his ancestry is discussed in detail above, so why do you sound like you stopped reading at the picture, writing nonsense that his surname means “his ancestry could include German, Dutch or English forebears” when his ancestry through the surname “Welling” is already established?

crunty March 25, 2016 at 12:57 pm

Americans are mutts and lineages are complicated and three dimensional beasts to get to the bottom of. Continue to view things one dimensionally by all means.

follers March 25, 2016 at 12:59 pm

Again, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Your comment was about the origin of the surname “Welling”, which, in this case, has already been traced back to Germany. American interethnic marriage has nothing to with that.

crunty March 25, 2016 at 1:28 pm

Follers, you seem to be one of these wazzocks who has to have the last word on everything and generally be disparaging. It may have escaped your attention but Welling is a place name in Kent, England.

follers March 25, 2016 at 1:32 pm

Again, I have no idea what you’re talking about. You said that Tom Welling’s “Welling” line may have been German, Dutch, or English.

This was a totally bizarre comment because the specific origin has already been established in explicit detail. You just didn’t read it.

I’m honestly thinking that all text on this site after the pictures should be deleted.

andrew March 25, 2016 at 4:39 pm

@ follers

maybe “Welling” was anglicized. Btw people are really stupid.

andrew January 6, 2016 at 4:40 pm

In his Wikedia profile in German he’s described as having Irish, German and Amerindian ancestry

follers August 5, 2017 at 8:55 am

Welling does have non-German ancestry, as it turns out. I finally found his maternal grandmother.

I think the Wolfs were ethnic Germans.

Maybe bablah can shed some light on that.

bablah August 12, 2017 at 7:49 am

One of these Josef Meitzs might be the one on that census (destination is St. Louis. MO), but I can’t read where he’s from. Kinda looks like Krottendorf (part of Budapest). He’s definitely from somewhere in the Hungarian part of A-H. The only place on the list that I deffinitely recognise is Tiborfa which is in Slovenia.

follers August 12, 2017 at 8:00 am

The family don’t seem like ethnic Hungarians.

bablah August 12, 2017 at 8:35 am

They’re not. They’re German. It says they’re German on the passenger list.
If they’re indeed from Krottendorf, here’s an excerpt from wiki:
”Békásmegyer (German: Krottendorf) is a neighbourhood in Budapest, Hungary. By 1890 Békásmegyer had a population of 1340, 95% of Swabian (German) origin.”

Now, don’t get confused by the Swabian bit, it was a catch-all term for Germans (most of whom had nothing to do with Swabia).

bablah August 12, 2017 at 8:42 am
Freerk October 12, 2015 at 2:48 am

About “Johanna Kluempka”: “Kluempka” formally must be a Czech name, “Kelumpke” an East German/Slavic name. “Kotmann” may be an orthographic mistake – “Kot” is “sh*t” in refined German; nevertheless some people in Germany bear this name (actually about 100; poor people), but “Kottmann” is a common name.

Daron July 25, 2015 at 10:46 am

I have had a lot of friends of German descent and they are all blondes. He looks English or Irish.

A user July 25, 2015 at 4:52 pm

There are germans with dark hair you know.

Tyler Durden September 14, 2015 at 12:02 pm

What is with people on the internet and their tendency to claim not being blonde is un-german. Have you guys been looking through too much nazi memorabilia or something? Most Germans are dark haired.

Freerk September 27, 2015 at 7:36 pm

Not really. “Dark haired” is definitely a minority. Most children have blond hair, most adult Germans are lighter haired, but not necessarily blonde, many have a light brown/dark blonde. And the more you go to the north, the more people are blonde.

Of course, the cliché of the “Arian” (what is, btw., a linguistic term…) German is a projection of the nazis. Also in Hollywood movies, Germans are usually blond – more than in reality.

rafe December 5, 2015 at 8:40 pm

You had to have all of that long rant just so you could wind up agreeing that most Germans are not blonde? OK. Also, it’s spelled “Aryan”; “Arian” means something else (an extinct Christian denomination).

Freerk January 26, 2016 at 7:10 pm

Seems to have been too much words for you to understand that I don’t agree … And second, I wasn’t in the mood to consult a dictionary for the correct English spelling of what we spell “arisch” in German (but we normally avoid that word…), to the result that you couldn’t understand me. O_o Thanks for your essential comment. :P

What’s the correct translation of “Klugscheißer”?

rafe December 5, 2015 at 8:41 pm

Someone’s clearly obsessed about Germans and blondness.

rafe December 5, 2015 at 8:45 pm

To the British/Irish truthers: His nose is too wide for that.

gel January 4, 2016 at 11:24 am

Could be Irish. but perhaps for the nose – but certainly the face shape – too square.

“Ethnicity: unclear, possibly English”

Much is possible, but his surname Welling is a common German name:

(The site is in German, but I can translate it, if someone is interested)

Freerk April 28, 2015 at 6:56 pm

I forgot to mention: He looks completely German. ;-)

“He has a square face as most of the descendants of Native Americans like Johnny Depp, Ian Somerhalder, Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Patrick Swayze…notice that they all have large jew”

There isn’t a single confirmed Native American ancestor between all the people you named there. I also don’t think any of them own any large Jews. Slavery is illegal now in most states.

This site says he is of Irish and German descent.
This is from his own mouth. “I’m part German, Irish and possibly Native American”. I think Tom knows his own ancestry. Could this please be updated.

Hate Me January 21, 2012 at 2:50 pm

Possibly Native American? Why was that not noted?

Alice January 23, 2012 at 7:32 am
Another site stating Tom is of German and Irish ancestry.

Alice January 23, 2012 at 8:27 am
This is from a fan site for Tom Welling
“He has Irish and German ancestors. And his maternal great-grandfather was a native American. “

roman2886 June 24, 2014 at 10:58 am

Yes he does has no English in him not even a drop he is primarily Irish German and Native American he may not be a Native American Euromutt but at least he is mixed he defiantly knows his ethnic background.

J.J. June 24, 2014 at 7:13 pm

nice find alice, and i’ve always thought the native american is somewhat evident, i don’t see why his ethnicity is listed as; “unclear, possibly english”, i think this website is getting too hung up on finding hardcore evidence and going by surname’s and maiden names of celebrities in order to identify their ethnicity. some celebrities are clueless as to what their ancestry is but if a celebrity states what they know of their bloodline, this website should list it

ashash June 24, 2014 at 7:18 pm

He doesn’t know if he has any Native American ancestry, hence the “possibly.” The reason why they look for evidence is because many celebrities have claimed to have Native American ancestry but turned out not to have any. Others have claimed to be of some other ancestry that they also have turned out not to have. I think there’s nothing wrong with trying to be accurate.

follers June 24, 2014 at 8:53 pm

What’s the evidence that that’s his real MySpace?

I haven’t seen any proof that Tom Welling has ever claimed, himself, to have Native American (or Irish or German) ancestry.

Quinn December 28, 2011 at 6:12 pm

He has a square face as most of the descendants of Native Americans like Johnny Depp, Ian Somerhalder, Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Patrick Swayze…notice that they all have large jew

caliste June 10, 2014 at 8:08 am

I didn’t believe a person could be so dense.

Have you ever been outside of your own country? Have you ever been to Britain, Germany, Netherlands, or a country in Scandinavia? or even some of the Slavic countries? Big jaws are very common among them. You do realzie the cromagnons settled in Europe right? Northern Europeans have some of the biggest jawlines on the planet. Big Jaws aren’t an exclusive native trait. Furthermore, Tom Welling looks almost completely British like most American white entertainers. Now you look at a handful of Aussies, & Brits and tell me he does not look it. Furthermore most American celebs claiming native ancestry don’t have a drop. You realize the large majority of Natives were genocided. At the time America had only a small population. Its present population is a HUGE increase 10 fold. So please tell me how a bunch of white americans who mostly arrived AFTER the fact the natives were genocided can have so much Native ancestry? LOL makes zero since. Its just like Brad Pitt, they discover a single one of his so called Native ancestry. Just a bunch of British looking celebrities trying to “exotic-fy” themselves for some dumb reason.

Jeyd June 23, 2014 at 10:26 pm

Can’t handle the fact many actors
that play “Superman” these days

have ethnically diverse background?
Racist much? Celebrities today are

more racially integrated and mixed
more than ever. Sorry ass hillbilly.

ashash June 24, 2014 at 6:19 am

How is Tom Welling ethnically diverse? All the men who have played Superman have been tall, dark-haired, blue-eyed, white men. This includes the most recent one who is British.

follers June 24, 2014 at 9:49 am

Dean Cain is diverse, and some of the Supermans have had brown eyes (like Cain and Welling, though they gave Welling blue contact lenses).

ashash June 24, 2014 at 10:12 am

I forgot about Dean Cain!

I didn’t know that Welling had brown eyes. I thought his eyes were blue.

follers June 24, 2014 at 10:16 am

Sorry, I meant Brandon Routh, not Tom Welling. I confused their names in my head since we’re on Welling’s page.

J.J. June 24, 2014 at 7:09 pm

tom welling’s eyes are blue however they have gold/brown around the pupil and could pass for green

WTF June 24, 2014 at 11:48 am

LMFAO I swear some of y’all mothafuckas on this site are the stupidest people on earth. Since when does having a square face correlate with being part “Native American”. Dumbass! Anyone can have a square face, it doesn’t mean that you’re part Native American. Fuckin idiot!

eee December 28, 2011 at 1:16 pm

he looks really white for some reason i can´t see the native in him but hes hot

(Welling is also a very dutchy-like name ,.since I live in The Netherlands ,..hah it sounds familiar)

Leslie March 8, 2011 at 7:16 am

Wow good job Tom, nice to see that this site is pretty innacurate and goes by people’s “Surname” rather than actual facts and heritage. It seems like every page i go to with someone of Irish or German descent this site twist’s it around to make them English. Are the English really that desperate to get rid of the “Ugly Stereotype” they have on them to attempt and falsely claim Irish & German Americans as being English? Pathetic. I’ll now take everything said on this site with a grain a salt without proper research its clear this is not a site of facts.

Tom March 6, 2011 at 8:08 am

Dunno where the “English” bit came from but here are all the sources about his race, none of them say anything about English just German/Irish/Native the only one that says English is ofcourse wiki (under irish american actors)

^ Irish, German, Native

^ Irish, German, Native

The only place where it says he’s English ( with no mention of Native) is here.

Since wiki excluded Native i think its safe to assume wiki is wrong.

Tom March 6, 2011 at 7:51 am

Tom Welling is Irish, German, & Native descent with possible English heritage (though many sites seem to dispute having any English heritage at all) the only site i could find that says he’s English is wiki which is not the best of sources since his wiki doesn’t even say he’s Native at all. His middle name is also Patrick.

He is also on the list of Irish american actors of partial or full ancestry

Also Tom doesn’t look English at all aka “Anglo Saxon” a study of his facial features and skull shape shows that, Tom has a more celtic phenotype thats why he looks exactly like various other Irish actors ie: Cilian Murphy, Patrick Dempsey, Matt Dallas, Paul Walker.

Tom March 6, 2011 at 8:12 am

Tom Welling Q&A’s

“He has Irish and German ancestors. And his maternal great-grandfather was a native American.”

follers February 1, 2014 at 7:33 am

I don’t know about Matt Dallas’s ancestry, but Patrick Dempsey and Paul Walker may not have/have had any Irish ancestry.

It’s hard to find any genealogical material on Tom. And I am not sure if he himself has ever mentioned his ancestry.
