Tom is the son of Angela and author Mike Maden. They are pictured here and here, respectively.

Tom’s paternal grandfather was William Walter Maden, Jr. (the son of William Walter Maden, Sr. and Marian L. Costa). Tom’s grandfather William was born in California. He is pictured here. Tom’s great-grandparents William and Marian were listed as “Indian” on the 1940 U.S. Census, and as white on the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses.

Tom’s great-grandfather William was born in Arizona. William’s father, Elbert/Flhert/Ebbert W. Maden, was born in Virginia or Maryland, to black parents from the Caribbean/West Indies, his father from one controlled by the French, and his mother from an English-controlled one. William’s mother was named Julia Washington, and likely was African-American. Tom’s great-grandmother Marian was born in California, the daughter of Joaquin/Joaquim Costa, who was Portuguese, and of Marian Serpa, whose parents were Portuguese.

Tom’s paternal grandmother was Dorothy Evelyn/S. Gallez (the daughter of Daniel David Gallez and Beatrice Fleming). Daniel was the son of Abraham Edward Gallez, whose parents were French, and of Celine/Celina Glineur/Gilneur/Glinner/Golinem, who was from Labouverigue, Belgium. Beatrice was the daughter of Frank Fleming and Lizzie Smith.

Tom’s great-grandfather Thomas was born in Tennessee, the son of John Edward Lavin, whose parents were Irish, and of Mary Blanch/Blanche O’Connor, whose parents were also Irish. Helen was born in Tennessee, and likely was the daughter of Robert S. Cardwell and Ida Mae McKeehan.

Tom’s maternal grandmother is Barbara Allen Davis (the daughter of Henry Allen Davis and Mary Francis/Frances Lewis). Barbara was born in North Carolina. Henry was born in North Carolina, the son of Cleveland Sheldon Davis and Mattie Clyde Yeomans. Mary was born in North Carolina, the daughter of John Eastman Lewis and Sarah Frances Guthrie.

His great-grandfather William Walter Maden’s mother was Julia Washington. I think this is her:

Also, interestingly, Elbert Maden’s parents came from different West Indian islands; his father came from one controlled by the French, while his mother came from an English-controlled one.

I guess I found some interesting information about Maden’s paternal great-grandfather William:

    1) The following newspaper records show a William W. Maden, the son of a E./Flhert Maden, as living in Oregon trt, Berkeley, California. This William was quite certainly Tom’s great-grandfather.

    2) According to the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses, William’s father was born in either Virginia or Maryland.

    3) The 1940 U.S. Census has a Elbert/Ebbert W. Maden, born in Virginia, c. 1862, who was living in Oregon, Berkeley, California, with his much younger wife, Cora A. (Young), and their daughter. Elbert was listed as “Negro” on that Census.

Although is impossible for Cora to be William’s mother, I strongly believe Elbert was William’s father. That would make Tom at very least 1/16th African-American.
