I guess I found some interesting information about Maden’s paternal great-grandfather William:

1) The following newspaper records show a William W. Maden, the son of a E./Flhert Maden, as living in Oregon trt, Berkeley, California. This William was quite certainly Tom’s great-grandfather.

2) According to the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses, William’s father was born in either Virginia or Maryland.

3) The 1940 U.S. Census has a Elbert/Ebbert W. Maden, born in Virginia, c. 1862, who was living in Oregon, Berkeley, California, with his much younger wife, Cora A. (Young), and their daughter. Elbert was listed as “Negro” on that Census.

Although is impossible for Cora to be William’s mother, I strongly believe Elbert was William’s father. That would make Tom at very least 1/16th African-American.

It’s not unheard of that interracial couples list both people as the same race on censuses, sometimes even when it isn’t “White”. This man’s great-great-grandparents, an interracial couple (one white, one Chinese/Hawaiian), were both listed as “Chinese” on one census, despite one of them clearly being white:

I quite enjoy finding this type of ancestries.

You’re right. I guess we’ve also seen biracial/multiracial people listed as “Indian” in the past.

True. And there’s the case of the woman of Portuguese descent whose race was listed as “Puerto Rican”:
