Tom Daley at Nickelodeon's 26th Annual Kids' Choice Awards, USC

Birth Name: Thomas Robert Daley

Place of Birth: Plymouth, Devon, England, U.K.

Date of Birth: 21 May, 1994

Ethnicity: English, also approximately 3/32 Irish

Tom Daley is an English diver and television personality. He is of English, and also approximately 3/32 Irish, ancestry.

Tom’s paternal grandfather is David C. Daley (the son of James Joseph William Daley and Winifred Irene Eastlake). James was the son of Henry Deeley and Emily Heath. Winifred was the daughter of William George Eastlake and Blanche Mary Sawdy.

Tom’s paternal grandmother is Rose-Marie J. Lucas (the daughter of Wesley William Alfred Robert Lucas and Julia Millicent Edgecombe). Wesley was the son of Wesley John Lucas and Elfrida/Elfreda Louise Foot; Elfrida was a first cousin of politician Michael Foot (Michael Mackintosh Foot). This makes Tom Daley and Michael Foot first cousins, four times removed. Tom’s great-grandmother Julia Edgecombe was the daughter of Frederick Edgecombe and Julia Blanche Hehir.

Tom’s maternal grandparents are Douglas “Dougie” William Selvester/Silvester (the son of Frank Silvester and Florence M. Ward) and Jennifer A. Collins (the daughter of Theodore W. L. Collins and Irene G. Barley).

Tom’s family surname was changed from “Deeley” to “Daley” around the 1890s. Tom’s patrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his great-great-great-great-grandparents, John Deeley and Catherine Maria McDermot, who moved from Roscommon, Ireland, to Birmingham, England, in the 1830s.

Tom won two gold medals for England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, in the 10 metre synchro diving (with Max Brick) and the 10 m Individual Platform competition, and won the bronze medal for Great Britain in the individual competition at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. After his success at the 2012 Olympic Games and a summer of great sporting interest amongst the public in the UK, television network ITV approached Daley to have a role in their new celebrity diving reality TV show Splash! Tom made his debut in the show’s premiere on 5 January 2013 as a mentor to the celebrity competitors taking part.

Looks very exotic, but I’m guessing it’s just the tan.

sparkles180 August 17, 2015 at 1:35 am

He’s so hot! But I never knew he was english I thought he was from italy or something.

gel August 16, 2015 at 2:21 am

Yeah, he’s got the English look – but he’s been in the sun a long time!

cwm85 July 30, 2015 at 10:18 am

My partners mother is english. And her hair was black and eyes hazel. Last name Joyner. Her ancestry was traced all the way back to the 1600’s from England.

cwm85 July 30, 2015 at 10:16 am

Ignorance. Some English people are brown haired, black haired, blonde. Some have blues eyes, other times brow or hazel. There is no one size fits all. He fits in well with western Europe. United Kingdom. I would not mistake him for french or Spanish tho.

neiltennant July 17, 2015 at 8:54 am

he looks very italian

Okay, maybe I would’ve understood if he were full Irish or Welsh as they can be be dark. But English?

The most whitest and blondest people around me (especially here in AUS) are Anglo Saxons. He certainly doesn’t fit in that bill.

gel July 30, 2015 at 4:34 pm

“Anglo-Saxons” make up a small part of English population – they were overlords od the vastly more numerous Britons, just as the Normans were later.

rafe March 2, 2016 at 10:24 am

This is wholly incorrect, and based on poor interpretation of incomplete genetic data from the early 2000s. Updated genetics research proves that the English have been influenced a lot by the Anglo Saxons, deriving 30% of their ancestry from them. At 30% of a population, no ethnic group can be dismissed as merely overlords or insulated elites. Anglo Saxons were a major part of the population in England. Genetically, pre-historic inhabitants of what is now England don’t quite look like modern day Englishmen, though they look quite a bit like the Irish, for example. It’s because of the Anglo Saxon heritage that transformed England and pulled them closer genetically to continental Europeans, and further away from other Brits. Here’s a link to a study on the subject. http://dx.doi.org/10.1101/022723

gel March 2, 2016 at 2:42 pm

Not “wholly incorrect” – just 30% Anglo-Saxon in East Anglia, less elsewhere.

Don’t be so daft. I live in Australia as well and plenty of people have dark hair and brown eyes and are of English descent. There is variety in most European populations.

WTF November 7, 2014 at 7:30 pm

He is not just English. He looks too dark to be just English.

follers November 14, 2014 at 2:08 pm

Of course he’s not just English. This page makes it crystal clear that he’s also roughly 3/32 Irish.

jokin March 2, 2015 at 10:14 am

too dark?? come on….the fact that most northern europeans have lighter skin, does not mean that darker versions do not exist. He looks very english/irish to me.

Sully March 23, 2015 at 12:54 am

I would have mistaken him for Southern European, specifically Italian. He doesn’t tan like a Northern European. To me, he looks like he could be Ariana Grande’s brother.

White18 September 25, 2014 at 1:58 am

From traveling, he looks almost Indian. Indian not Native American.
But really he just looks like a Brit with a tan. At the end of the day we are all human and this website is stupid.

roman2886 November 20, 2014 at 10:06 am

He may have Indian blood a long way back.

Anja Hex September 13, 2014 at 12:29 pm

He almost looks like a Christmas elf

This guy clearly has some other as of yet unknown ancestry, I cant believe this was accepted. lets compare him to some of his supporters in the crowd http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/sport/files/2012/02/crowd.jpg

He clearly resembles the middle easterns in the crowd not the Brits. Heres another British crowd, he would stick out here. http://i.imgur.com/tPbVIvv.jpg

follers July 11, 2014 at 12:56 pm

I put up his ancestry now. He’s a typical English kid.

And he isn’t that Irish, either.

roman2886 October 18, 2014 at 10:16 am

There is English people that look like him.

follers July 11, 2014 at 1:52 pm

P.S., these are his maternal grandparents. He probably resembles that side of the family more.

andrew July 11, 2014 at 2:06 pm

scott you alwais think English people must have blond hair and blue eyes lol, I cant get what is exotic in this guy. You said the same about Russel Brand. Seriously, do you really know English people? Probably not

J.J. July 11, 2014 at 8:31 pm

in general english people have light hair and eyes, if this guy didn’t have brown eyes & dark hair and didn’t spend so much time in the sun, his english appearance would be more evident, his phenotype does look british, more alpine i’d say, but in having said that i wouldn’t be surprised if he has some sort of mediterranean ancestry

ashash July 12, 2014 at 11:52 am

You guys think every British person with dark hair and eyes are not actually British, even though they are …

Alice August 28, 2014 at 4:36 am

You’ve got to look at the features and his features aren’t middle eastern. He’s just got darker than average colouring. He might spend a lot of time in a sunnier climate with the tan he has. Most people have some foreign ancestry if they go back enough in their family tree. He appears to have mostly English ancestry though.

roman2886 October 18, 2014 at 10:20 am

He looks Italian the Romans were in Britain for nearly 400 years the Romans eventually married local British women and bred with them.

J.J. July 11, 2014 at 8:32 pm

problem with that?

andrew July 12, 2014 at 5:52 am

no, he’s openly gay. I thought it should be written

J.J. July 12, 2014 at 7:22 pm

oh really now? then perhaps you should go on all the other celebrity entries and comment “straight” perhaps that needs to be written as well

andrew July 12, 2014 at 7:28 pm

Ian Thorpe?
