Ted Cruz is an American politician, attorney, and political commentator. A Republican, he has served as a U.S. Senator from Texas, since January 3, 2013. He was a policy advisor in the George W. Bush administration, and Solicitor General of Texas, from January 9, 2003 to May 12, 2008. He had a leading role in the 2013 U.S. federal government shutdown.

He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 2016.

Ted was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Ted’s father, Rafael Bienvenido Cruz, is a preacher and public speaker who previously worked in computers. Ted’s father was born in Matanzas, Cuba, and came to the United States in 1957, to attend the University of Texas. He later received political asylum in the U.S. Ted’s father became a Canadian citizen in the 1970s, and became a United States citizen in 2005. Ted’s paternal grandfather was born in the Canary Islands, in Spain. Ted’s mother, Eleanor Elizabeth (Darragh), also worked in computers. Ted’s mother was born in Delaware, U.S., and is of three quarters Irish and one quarter Italian descent. Ted was raised in the United States from a young age. He had dual citizenship between the United States and Canada, and renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2014. Ted is married to investment manager Heidi (Nelson) Cruz, with whom he has two children.

If elected President of the United States, Ted Cruz would be the second person born in the province of Alberta to serve as either Prime Minister of Canada or President of the United States (Joe Clark, who was born in High River, Alberta, served as Prime Minister of Canada from 1979 to 1980).

Ted’s paternal grandfather was Rafael Cruz Gonzalez (the son of Agustin Cruz and Maria Gonzalez). Ted’s grandfather Rafael was either from the Canary Islands, Spain, and moved to Cuba; or was born in Cuba.

Ted’s paternal grandmother was named Emilia Laudelina Diaz (the daughter of Juan Diaz and Lola). Laudelina likely was born in Cuba.

Ted’s maternal grandfather was Edward John Darragh/Darrah (the son of Edward John Darragh/Darrah and Ellen/Ella T./J. Haggerty). Ted’s grandfather Edward was born in Delaware. Ted’s great-grandfather Edward was the son of Edward John Darragh, who was born in Pennsylvania, to Irish parents, and of Sarah Annie Welsh/Welch/Walsh, who was born in Pennsylvania, also to Irish parents. Ted’s great-grandmother Ellen was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Irish parents, John Haggerty and Roseanna/Rosanna Quinn.

Ted’s maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Eleanor Cekine (the daughter of Domenico/Dominic/Dominick/Domenico “John” Cicchini/Cekine and Mary Lonergan). Elizabeth was born in Delaware. Ted’s great-grandfather Domenico was born in Villamagna, Abruzzo, Italy, and was the son of Antonio Cicchini and Concetta Evangelista. Ted’s great-grandmother Mary was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, the daughter of Thomas Lonergan and Mary Poon.

Ted Cruz is the first person of Hispanic ancestry to have won a caucus and/or primary for a major American political party’s Presidential nomination. He won 11 contests in 2016, with the Iowa caucuses being the first. Marco Rubio, also in 2016, is the second. Cruz and Rubio are also the only people born in the 1970s to have won a major party’s presidential caucus and/or primary (thus far).

Ted is one of several people of Hispanic ancestry to have mounted a major campaign for President of the United States. The others were/are:
*Ben Fernandez (who sought the 1980, 1984, and 1988 Republican nominations; Fernandez’s parents were Mexican)
*Bill Richardson (who sought the 2008 Democratic nomination; three of Richardson’s grandparents were Hispanic)
*Marco Rubio (2016; Republican; won 3 contests; Rubio’s parents are Cuban)
*Richard Ojeda (who sought the 2020 Democratic nomination; Ojeda’s paternal grandfather was Mexican)
*Julián Castro (who sought the 2020 Democratic nomination; Castro is of Mexican descent)
*Francis Suarez (who sought the 2024 Republican nomination; Suarez is of Cuban descent)

Several prominent candidates for President of the United States can be considered Hispanic in a sense, though they were not of Spanish and/or Indigenous ancestry:
*George W. Romney (who sought the 1968 Republican nomination, and whose name was placed in nomination for 1964’s; he was born in Mexico, of non-Hispanic descent)
*Pierre S. du Pont IV (who sought the 1988 Republican nomination; his maternal grandfather was born in Chile, of non-Hispanic descent)
*John McCain (who sought the 2000 Republican nomination, and who was the 2008 Republican nominee; he was born in Panama, of non-Hispanic descent)
*Mitt Romney (who sought the 2008 Republican nomination, and who was the 2012 Republican nominee; his father George was born in Mexico, of non-Hispanic descent)

This page is so uncultured!! Stating that someone has Cuban ancestry says nothing about ethnicity or race. Cuba has White european (basically spaniard), black, mulatto and mixed people. Please, you should be more accurate and precise on this.

He surely has spaniard ancestry (on his cuban side), italian and irish, so he has fully White european ancestry.

jokin, this page is supposed to list ethnic ancestries. Listing statistical history is stating a person’s possible ethnic ancestry. Cuba is very much a mulatto country. Difference is the caste system gave strife to peoples’ mindset there, and that’s why they hate the idea being of possible African descent.

No, Cubas white population is significant, at least 30%.. and most of the Cuban exiles were white especially those in the early days of the revolution. You have to realize that Cuba was the only predominately white island in the Caribbean before the revolution, because it was heavily settled by Spaniards in order for the afro-Cuban population not to exceed (which at one point before mass settlement it did). It’s funny how Cubas white population is at least three times bigger than South Africas, yet no one questions white South Africans…

From my information, the black enslaved and free outnumber the whites. It was so bad, that the government tried to ban the free blacks from the island, from fear of a revolt . It wasn’t until the mid 1800’s that whites outnumber the blacks, then only by 70,000. The problem is that many blacks join the Cuban armies during wars. IMO I think that 60% white on the island is highly inflated . my guess is that the black and mulatto population is the 60%

Well from my understanding , it’s said that white South Africans can avg up to 10% indigenous African dna

He’s a typical White Atlantid type.

Pretty sure Cubans have African blood in them. His dad looks like a mulatto just by his nose alone.

    • noneofyourbusiness says:

White Cubans exist, not all of them are mixed with African.

      • RandomNames09 says:

“White Cubans” exist based on self-reporting, but not as actual data. As I wrote below, 70% of Cubans have African blood, but only 12% identify as African. I read a statistic, now that I remember, that the average “White Cuban” has anywhere from 4-10% African ancestry.

It all stems back from the fact Cuba had a very large African population, which also mixed with the European population, effectively making it a mulatto country. The country’s government didn’t like that, so they had a very liberal immigration policy to attract European immigrants. They did that to “lighten” up the population. Same happened to Brazil.

Then now we are talking about purity of whites. I am sure that a genetics test is made in USA and great part of whites will not be “pure” . If including many European Royal familys are not pure white. It is interesting that always people is talking about Latin American whites not being white enough, but when a person here in ethnic celeb has a native American ancestry, all begin to say, it is very few it doesn´t count.

          • RandomNames09 says:

No, we’re talking about ‘historical’ ethnic extraction. If you have a history, and a common history, of probable non-white ancestry..then it has to be claimed. Especially when you have 4-10% African ancestry on average.

Also, yes the idea of “pure” racial lineage is not fourthright. A person in Germany has African ancestry, and a person in Sweden has Asian ancestry. The nuanced difference is it’s probably around 0.5 percent on those that do, not 4-10% of average like “White” Cubans.

          • RandomNames09 says:

*A person in Germany and Sweden could have African and Asian ancestry.

          • loiro says:

RandomNames09, you’re reaching.. the difference between Swedes and Germans is that if they have non white admixture its prehistoric and very distant. Many white americans DO have non-white ancestry and its recent (colonial).. and can reach percentages of 10% too, so to talk about racial purity for any group in the Americas is ridiculous. Also even in Europe Finns have 10% North Asian admixture on average, does that make them non-white? Obviously not. Many Cubans are 100% White though, and white cubans who have admixture usually have low amounts (under 10 percent)… check out white cubans on 23and me a good percentage of them come out 100/99/98%

      • RandomNames09 says:

Pretty facile claim you’re trying to make. Just because you don’t explicitly ‘look’ a certain race, doesn’t mean you aren’t.

70% of Cuban have African ancestry in them, but only 12% of them identify as a African. So, there’s a more than half chance this Cuban has it also.

        • thomas1987 says:

          He is white
not all white people have thin noses
          look up Carrie Underwood

        • loiro says:

First of all that isn’t true at all, and even many white Americans have 4% SSA blood. 10% SSA blood is not significant enough to show much less. Chris and Wentworth are more than 10%, and both look mixed..

        • loiro says:

12% identify as black.. more of them identify as Mulato, having african ancestry doesn’t mean your black… mulatos also have african ancestry. and we’re talking about the current cuban population, which DOES NOT resemble the early cuban exile population which were mostly middle/upper class whites, and many of them immigrants or sons of immigrants from spain themselves.

I wonder if he will challenge Stephen Harper for the Conservative Party nomination, for 2015’s election. It should be an interesting race.
