Tavi Gevinson is an American writer, magazine editor, singer, and actress. She wrote fashion blog Style Rookie, and founded, and was editor-in-chief of, online teenage girl-aimed magazine Rookie. She has also had roles on the shows Scream Queens and Gossip Girl, and in the films Enough Said, Goldbricks in Bloom, Person to Person, and Shortcomings.

Her father, Steve Gevinson, is an American-born teacher, and is from an Orthodox Jewish family, of Russian Jewish and Polish Jewish descent. Her mother, Berit Engen, a weaver, is Norwegian, from Oslo; Berit was raised a Lutheran, and converted to Judaism in 2001. She is a part-time Hebrew teacher.

Tavi was raised Jewish and had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony.

Tavi’s paternal grandfather is Harry Gevinson (the son of Benjamin Gevinson and Anna Mitchell). Harry was born in Virginia, to a Russian Jewish father and a Polish Jewish mother.

Tavi’s paternal grandmother is Marcella Grossman (the daughter of Max Grossman and Pearl Aronov). Marcella was born in New York, to a Russian Jewish father and a Polish Jewish mother.
