Mike Lee is an American politician, author, and attorney. A member of the Republican Party, he has been a U.S. Senator from Utah, since January 3, 2011, and Chairman of the Senate Republican Steering Committee, from January 3, 2015.

Mike is the son of Janet (Griffin) and Rex E. Lee. His father, a lawyer and law clerk, was Solicitor General of the United States, from 1981 to 1985, and President of Brigham Young University, from 1989 to 1995, among other duties. Mike’s mother was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Département des Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, France, to American parents. Mike’s brother, Thomas Rex Lee, has been Associate Justice of the Utah Supreme Court, since 2010.

Mike is married to Sharon Burr, with whom he has three children.

Mike is a second cousin of U.S. Senator Mark Udall, U.S. Senator Tom Udall, and U.S. Senator Gordon H. Smith.

Mike’s paternal grandfather was Rex E. Lee (the son of John David Lee and Inez Louisa Hamblin). Rex was born in Arizona. John was the son of John Doyle Lee and Lavina Young. Inez was the daughter of Jacob Vernon Hamblin and Louisa Bonelli. Mike’s great-great-grandmother Louisa was of Swiss-Italian and Swiss-German origin, and was the daughter of George Bonelli and Anna Maria Ammann, from Affeltrangen, Thurgau, Switzerland.

Mike’s paternal grandmother was Mabel Whiting (the daughter of Edwin Isaacson Whiting and Ethel Farr). Mabel was born in Arizona. Edwin was the son of Edwin Marion Whiting and Anna Maria Isaacson, whose parents were Danish, her father from Bachgaard and her mother from Jegindø.

Mike’s maternal grandfather was Smith Benjamin Griffin (the son of Benjamin James Griffin and Maud Smith). Mike’s grandfather Smith was a Treasury Attaché of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.

Mike’s maternal grandmother was Marian Ione Hussey (the daughter of Charles Henry Hussey and Mary Alice Lambert). Marian was born in Utah. Charles’ mother was English.

Carlos Alvarado Quesada is a Costa Rican writer, journalist, political scientist, and politician. He has served as President of Costa Rica, since 8 May, 2018. He was previously the Minister of Labor and Social Security, from 29 March, 2016 to 19, January 2017.

President Alvarado is the son of Alejandro Alvarado Induni and Adelia Quesada Alvarado.

President Alvarado is married to architect Claudia Dobles Camargo, with whom he has a son.

President Alvarado’s paternal grandfather was Manuel Francisco de Jesús Alvarado Salazar (the son of Juan Bautista Alvarado Mora and María Josefa Celia de Jesús Salazar González). President Alvarado’s maternal grandfather was Manuel de Jesús Quesada Castro (the son of Serviliano Joaquín Jorge de Jesús Quesada y Marín and Juana Benita Castro Mora). Serviliano was the son of George (later Jorge) de Jesús Quesada Solano and Ramona Marín Muñoz. Juana was the daughter of Manuel de los Dolores Castro Umaña and Mónica de los Santos Mora Venegas.

President Alvarado’s maternal grandmother was Noemi Dominga del Rosario Alvarado Romero (the daughter of Noé Rafael María de Jesús Alvarado Morales and Adelia Urbana de los Ángeles Romero Mora). Noemi was born in San José, Costa Rica. Noé was the son of Juan Alvarado Jiménez and Sinforosa de la Concepción Morales. Adelia was the daughter of Juan de Jesús Romero Badilla and María Joaquina Ángela del Rosario Mora y Venegas, who was the younger sister of Mónica de los Santos Mora Venegas.

President Alvarado’s matrilineal ancestry can be traced back to his fifth great-grandmother, Magdalena Rodríguez (c. 1780 – 1 June 1840, San José).
