Gig Young was an American actor. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969).

Gig was the son of Emma Clements (Dingman) and James Earl “John” Barr. His father was born in Iowa, to Canadian parents. His mother was born in Minnesota, also to Canadian parents. He was married to drama coach Sophie Rosenstein, until her death, and to magazine editor Kim Schmidt, until his death. He had a daughter with his former wife, real estate agent Elaine Williams.

Gig’s paternal grandparents were William E. Barr and Jane Rice.

Gig’s maternal grandfather was Solomon Howard Dingman (the son of Jacob Schuyler Dingman and Phoebe Ann Tripp). Jacob was born in Charleston, New York, the son of Peter Dingman and Margaret Gardiner, of Dutch ancestry. Phoebe was born in Canada, the daughter of Charles Tripp and Jane E. Catherine Emma Woodworth.

Gig’s maternal grandmother was Clemence Meyette Croisetiere (the daughter of Charles Croisetiere and Julie Portneuf Heneau). Clemence was born in Québec, Canada. Charles was the son of Etienne Claude Croisetiere and Marie-Catherine Barthe.
