He was previously Minister of Vocational Education, from 27 March, 2000 to 6 May, 2002, and represented Essonne in the French Senate, from 2 October, 1986 to 24 September, 1995, and again from 1 October, 2004 to 7 January, 2010. He was the candidate for La France insoumise in the 2017 French presidential election, and lost in the first round.

He is married to Clio Maria Bittoni, with whom he has two children.
