Date of Birth: Januari 11, 1975

*Malian (father)
*Slovak, German, possibly English (mother)

Timbuktu is a Swedish rapper, singer, songwriter, and presenter.

His father, who is black, is from Harlem, New York, and has roots in Mali. Timbuktu has stated that his surname is common among the Fula people. It is not clear if his father is of entirely or partly Malian descent (his middle name, “Robinson”, may come from his own mother’s maiden name).

His mother, who is white, grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and is of Slovak descent on one side, and of German, and possibly English, ancestry on the other.

Timbuktu’s maternal grandfather was Francis C. M. Bosak (the son of Michael Bosák and Susanna/Suzanne Hudak). Michael and Susanna were Slovak immigrants; Michael was born in Okrúhle, Šariš County, Slovakia.

Timbuktu’s maternal grandmother was Mildred R. Hausser/Haisser (the daughter of Edward Haisser and Emma Miller). Edward was born in New York, to German parents. Emma was born in Maryland, and possibly had English ancestry.

"Black Nativity" New York City Premiere - Arrivals

Birth Name: Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones

Place of Birth: Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York City, New York, U.S.

Date of Birth: September 14, 1973

Ethnicity: African-American

Nas is an American recording artist, record producer, songwriter, actor, and entrepreneur. He is known as an influential hip hop artist who, in his debut album Illmatic in 1994, was billed as the second coming of Rakim. Nas is highly rated in underground and mainstream circles, and is known for his lyrical ability and distinctive flow.

Nas is the son of Ann and Olu Dara (born Charles Jones III), who is a cornetist, guitarist, and singer. His father converted to Islam and changed his name to Olu Dara, which in Yoruba means “God is Good”.

Internet assertions that Nas’s father has recent Yoruba or Nigerian ancestry are not correct. Both of Nas’s parents are from African-American families that have lived in the United States for centuries. A DNA test whose results were displayed on the show Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2014) stated that some of Nas’s ancestors were originally from Nigeria, Benin and Togo, Mali, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Congo, and Senegal.

Nas has a daughter with his former partner, Carmen Bryan, and a son with his former wife, singer, songwriter, and chef Kelis.

Nas’s paternal grandparents were Charles Rufus Jones II (the son of Charles Jones) and Ella Mae Jones.

Nas’s maternal grandfather was Mack Little II (the son of Walter Little and Fannie Little). Walter was the son of Eugene Little and Julia Cole. Fannie was the daughter of Mack Little and Celia “Celle”.

Nas’s maternal grandmother was Nannie Little (the daughter of Atlas Little and Ada Chambers). Atlas was the son of Patrick Little and Adaline Gay. Nas’s great-grandmother Ada Chambers was the daughter of Harry Chambers and Eliza.

Nas is a first cousin, once removed, of actress Yara Shahidi. She has stated, “My momma grew up with him. He got his genealogy done at Harvard and Henry Louis Gates Jr. did his entire family background. I was a flower girl at his wedding.”

A DNA test taken by the show Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2014) stated that Nas’s genetic ancestry is:

*84% African

Gloria Reuben

"Righteous Kill" New York City Premiere - Arrivals

Birth Name: Gloria Elizabeth Reuben

Place of Birth: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Date of Birth: June 9, 1964

Ethnicity: Jamaican (African, Ashkenazi/Sephardi Jewish, likely some English)

Gloria Reuben is a Canadian singer, actress, and producer. Her parents, Pearl Avis (Mills), a singer, and Cyril George Reuben, an engineer, were from Jamaica. Her brother was actor and singer Denis Simpson.

Her father was of mostly white ancestry, though he also had some black roots; his white ancestry included a significant amount of Jewish, evidently both Sephardi and Ashkenazi. Her mother was black, though with some European ancestry.

Genealogist Henry Louis Gates, Jr. was able to trace Gloria’s ancestry back to her maternal great-great-great-great-great-grandmother, Leonorah, who was born, c. 1767, in Africa.

Gloria’s father was born outside of marriage.

Gloria’s paternal grandfather was believed to be a man named Henry Emanuel Reuben (the son of Isaac Reuben and Judith). Isaac was the son of Jacob Reuben, who was born, c. 1780, in Jamaica. Judith was the daughter of Samuel.

However, DNA testing indicates that Gloria’s biological paternal grandfather was a man with the surname Lindo. The Lindos are a Sephardi Jewish family who are prominent in Jamaica.

Gloria’s paternal grandmother was Florence Gabay (the daughter of John Edmund/Edward Gabay and Amelia). Florence was of partial African ancestry. John was the son of William Gabay.

Gloria’s maternal grandparents were Thomas Leopold Mills and Myra Gertrude Samuels (the daughter of Hezekiah Samuels and Rebecca Higgin). Rebecca was the daughter of Isaac Higgin, whose parents, Thomas Higgins and Elizabeth Martin, were born into slavery.

A DNA test whose results were displayed on the show Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2014) stated that Gloria’s genetic ancestry is:

*59.3% European
*38.7% Sub-Saharan African
*0.3% East Asian/Native American

In his 2016 book about the show, Finding Your Roots, Season 2: The Official Companion to the PBS Series, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. wrote that among Gloria’s genetic ancestry that was marked “European” is 28% Northern European, 12.3% Ashkenazi Jewish, and 10.4% Southern European (likely Sephardi Jewish). He wrote that among Gloria’s genetic ancestry that was marked “African” is 23% Nigerian, 8% Malian, and 7% Ghanaian and from the Ivory Coast.

Gloria’s matrilineal DNA traces back to Cameroon.
