Benjamin N. Cardozo was an American lawyer and jurist. He was Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from March 2, 1932 to July 9, 1938, his death. He was also Justice of the Supreme Court of New York for the First Judicial Division, from January 5, 1914 to January 15, 1917, and Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, from January 1, 1927 to March 7, 1932.

Justice Cardozo was the son of Rebecca Washington (Nathan) and Albert Jacob Cardozo. His family was Jewish, both Sephardi (from England, Portugal, Spain, and Morocco) and Ashkenazi (from Germany).

Justice Cardozo was a first cousin of poet Emma Lazarus. Their mothers were sisters.

Justice Cardozo could be considered the first Hispanic Justice on the United States Supreme Court, preceding Sonia Sotomayor.

Justice Cardozo’s paternal grandfather was Michael Hart Cardozo (the son of Isaac Nunez Cardozo and Sarah Hart). Michael was born in Pennsylvania. Isaac was born in London, England, the son of Aaron Nunez Cardozo and Sarah Nunez Navaro. Justice Cardozo’s great-grandmother Sarah Hart was the daughter of Myer Hart/Hart de Shira/Texeira and Rachel de Lyon.

Justice Cardozo’s paternal grandmother was Ellen Hart (the daughter of Abraham Hart). Ellen was born in Black River, St Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica, and was a first cousin of Justice Cardozo’s paternal grandfather. Abraham was born in Virginia, the son of Myer Hart/Hart de Shira/Texeira and Rachel de Lyon.

Justice Cardozo’s maternal grandfather was Isaac Mendes Seixas Nathan (the son of Simon Nathan and Grace Mendes Seixas). Isaac was born in New York. Simon was born in Frome, Somerset, England, the son of Judah Nathan. Grace was born in Connecticut, the daughter of Isaac Mendes Seixas, who was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and of Rachel Franks Levy, who was born in London, England.

Justice Cardozo’s maternal grandmother was Sarah Mendes Seixas (the daughter of Benjamin Mendes Seixas and Zipporah Levy). Sarah was born in New York, and was a first cousin of Justice Cardozo’s maternal grandfather. Benjamin was born in Rhode Island, the son of Isaac Mendes Seixas and Rachel Franks Levy. Emma Lazarus

Emma Lazarus was an American poet. She wrote The New Colossus, in 1883 (“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”). The poem was inscribed on a plaque in a pedestal in the Statue of Liberty in 1903.

She was the daughter of Esther Lydia Mary (Nathan) and Moses Lazarus. Her parents were both born in New York. Her family was Jewish, both Ashkenazi (from Germany) and Sephardi (from England, Portugal, Spain, and Morocco). One of her paternal great-great-grandmothers, Caroline Webb, may have been of English descent, and a convert to Judaism.

Emma was a first cousin of United Stated Supreme Court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo. Their mothers were sisters.

Emma’s paternal grandfather was Eleazar Samuel Lazarus (the son of Samuel Eleazar Lazarus and Fanny Cushell). Emma’s great-grandfather Samuel was the son of Eleazer Lazarus.

Emma’s paternal grandmother was Zipporah Hart (the daughter of Jacob Naphtali Hart and Leah Thérèse Nathan). Zipporah was born in New York. Jacob was born in Fürth, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Jacobus S. Hart. Leah was born in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Lyon Nathan and Caroline Webb.

Derrick’s biological father, George Edward Crimarco, is an American lawyer, of half Italian and half Jamaican descent. Derrick’s mother, Maria Cristina “Tina” Buganan Monasterio, is a Filipina actress, of Spanish (Castilian and Valencian), Tagalog and Waray, and one eighth English, descent.

Derrick’s biological paternal grandfather was Edward Nicholas Crimarco (the son of Gregorio Trimarco, later George Criamrco, and of Maria “Mary” di Francesco). Gregorio was an Italian emigrant, from San Gregorio Magno, Province of Salerno. Maria “Mary” was also an Italian immigrant, and was the daughter of Giovanni “John” di Francesco and Nicoletta Albanese.

Derrick’s biological paternal grandmother was Fay Seaga (the daughter of Faried “Philip” George Seaga and Erna Aletta Maxwell). Derrick’s maternal grandfather was Rafael Carlos “Ralph” Monasterio y Gardiner (or Rafael Carlos Gardiner Monasterio in Filipino, the son of Agustín Monasterio y Pozo and Ana Beatriz Gardiner y Carrosino). Agustín was a Spanish physician, from Zamora, Zamora, and was the son of Manuel Monasterio Marina and Patricia Pozo Herrarte. Ana Beatriz was the daughter of William A. Gardiner, who was English, and of Filomena Carrosino y Escoreal, whose father, Manuel Carrosino, was Spanish, from Torrevieja, Alicante.

Derrick’s maternal grandmother was Lydia Pilapil Buganan (the daughter of David Bagtas Buganan and Juana Pilapil). David was the son of Vicente Buganan and Rufina Bagtas.
