Stephen A. Douglas was an American politician. He designed the Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854, which created those territories. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the Secretary of State of Illinois, from 1840 to 1841, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Illinois, from February 15, 1841 to June 28, 1843, a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, from March 4, 1843 to March 3, 1847, and a U.S. Senator from Illinois, from March 4, 1847 to June 3, 1861.

He was the Democratic Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1860, representing the Northern Democrats. He was also a candidate for the Democratic Party’s 1852 and 1856 presidential nominations.

Stephen was the son of Sarah (Fisk/Fiske) and Stephen Arnold Douglass. He was married to Martha Martin, until her death, and to Adele Cutts, until his death.

Stephen’s paternal grandfather was Benajah Douglas (the daughter of Asa Douglass/Douglas and Rebecca Wheeler). Benajah was born in Connecticut. Asa was the son of Deacon William Douglas and Sarah Proctor. Rebecca was the daughter of Jonathan Wheeler and Sarah Partridge.

He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1852.

President Buchanan was the son of Elizabeth (Speer) and James Buchanan. His father was born in Blairlush, County Donegal, Ireland, to a Protestant family. His mother was also of Scots-Irish descent.

Franklin Pierce was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 14th President of the United States, from March 4, 1853 to March 4, 1857. He was elected to the position in 1852.

He was previously a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New Hampshire, from March 4, 1833 to March 3, 1837, and a U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, from March 4, 1837 to February 28, 1842.

He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1856.

President Pierce was the son of Anna (Kendrick) and Benjamin Pierce, who was Governor of New Hampshire, from 1827 to 1828, and again from 1829 to 1830. His brother was career army officer Benjamin Kendrick Pierce. President Pierce was of entirely Colonial American descent. His ancestry was English, along with a Welsh great-great-great-grandfather. He was married to Jane Means (Appleton) Pierce, with whom he had three children.

President Pierce was a fourth cousin, four times removed, of U.S. First Lady Barbara Bush (born Barbara Pierce). His great-great-great-grandparents, Thomas Pierce and Elizabeth Cole, were also Barbara’s seven times great-grandparents. Thomas Pierce was born, c. 1618, in England.
