Shailene Woodley

by follers on October 11, 2012

Birth Name: Shailene Diann Woodley

Place of Birth: San Bernardino, California, United States

Date of Birth: November 15, 1991

Ethnicity:
*English (father)
*African-American, Louisiana Creole [African, French, Spanish, German], English, Swiss-German (mother)

Shailene Woodley is an American actress and activist.

Shailene’s father has English ancestry. Shailene’s maternal grandfather had African-American ancestry, and Shailene’s maternal grandmother has Louisiana Creole (including African, French, Spanish, and German) ancestry on one side of her family, and English and Swiss-German ancestry on the other side of her family.

A picture of Shailene’s mother can be seen below.

Shailene’s paternal grandfather was Virgil James Woodley (the son of James F. Woodley and Velma L. Howard). Virgil was born in Oklahoma.

Shailene’s paternal grandmother was Dovie Oralee Sims (the daughter of Omer Epsy Sims and Eva Ellen Payne). Dovie was born in Texas, and had English ancestry. Omer was the son of Denton Otto Sims and Clara Florence Allen. Eva was the daughter of Hiram Walker Payne and Verdenia Maude Ellis.

Shailene’s maternal grandfather was Stephen David Victor (the son of Harold J. Victor and Bessie M. Harrold). Stephen was born in California. According to most censuses, both Harold and Bessie were Black and/or biracial (censuses list Harold and Bessie as black, and one census lists them as “Mulatto”). Harold was born in Louisiana, to Leila. Bessie was born in California, to Texas-born parents, William John Harrold and Bessie Hutchins.

Shailene’s maternal grandmother is Diane Lynn Fauria (the daughter of Vernon Louis Fauria and Marguerite Lois Davis). Diane was born in California. Vernon was a Louisiana Creole. Maguerite was caucasian. A picture of Vernon and Marguerite can be seen here.

Shailene’s great-grandfather Vernon Fauria’s parents both had black ancestry, mixed with caucasian. Vernon’s father, Joseph Mathews/Matthews Fauria, was of African, Spanish, French, and German descent. Vernon’s mother, Aline Louise Martinez, had Spanish, African, and possibly French, ancestry. A picture of Vernon with his siblings can be seen here. A picture of Vernon’s parents, Shailene’s great-great-grandparents Joseph and Aline, can be seen here. A picture of Shailene’s great-great-grandfather, Joseph Mathews Fauria (top left), with his own parents, Victor Nicholas Fauria and Agnes Cora Zipple (seated), can be seen here.

Shailene’s great-grandmother Maguerite Davis’s father, Norman Edward Davis, was of British Isles/English ancestry. Maguerite’s mother, Shailene’s maternal great-great-grandmother, Evangeline/Evangelia/Perrengere/Berengere Perrin/Perrine, was Swiss, of Swiss-German descent, and was the daughter of Lewis O. Perrin and Berthe C. Hague. This makes Shailene Woodley of 1/16th Swiss ancestry.

Norman E. Davis —> Norman Edward Davis
was likely of British Isles/English ancestry —> was of British Isles/English ancestry
Evangeline Perinjacket —> Evangeline/Perrengere/Berengere Perrin/Perrine

Swiss —> Swiss-German

Perinjacket sounds like a made up surname. Are there any records with her having that name?

Wow! I never thought she had African ancestry. I just thought she was full European. She is very beautiful

neiltennant January 18, 2017 at 10:02 am

I swear one day i will find out that i have also african american ancestors

Kimmel September 4, 2016 at 8:16 pm

She has a very interesting lineage. I must say its like most of her recent family line are full of nearly-men, all ‘passing’ down the years as white. I see more mixed ancestry in Shailene than her mother though.

alexgxo December 21, 2016 at 10:43 pm

Shailene shows admixture? Where? Looks Western European.

Fatmonkey August 3, 2016 at 10:01 am

I would never, to save my life, guess a girl with this look can have a black mother.

andrew August 3, 2016 at 10:59 am
Fatmonkey August 4, 2016 at 8:25 am

My fellow Serbs are predominantly white Caucasian, so I guess yeah, the “you can ever meet” part is true enough.

I think it’s funny how everyone is talking about how “I don’t think she’s really black” or “I’d like to see how much she really is”. People can look one thing and be another.

I look white but I’m mixed. I have friends that look white, but are Hispanic and speak fluent Spanish. It’s stupid that everyone wants to know race/ethnicity. We’re human…we’re part of the human race.

Yes, people have different heritage/culture/spoken language. It’s cool to know what someone’s culture is, but skin color is stupid and it shouldn’t matter.

Greyface April 16, 2016 at 9:03 pm

worst comment on the history of this site, which is called ETHNICELEBS

biology isn’t “stupid”

and spanish is a white language by the way.

davidcathers June 26, 2016 at 2:43 pm

You literally just proved my whole comment.

alexgxo September 3, 2016 at 9:46 pm

She was a victim of the damn one drop rule as all of her relatives and ancestors as far as I see show no signs of admixture.

bakchoyhurl February 6, 2016 at 11:22 am

Lol black? I didn’t see that coming.

cwm85 November 15, 2015 at 3:44 pm

She made have little black ancestry but in no way can she be considered anything other than white. Pictures of her greatgrandparents is not clear how mixed they are… anyone who says she is anything other than white is a troll.

fuzzybear44 November 16, 2015 at 12:02 am

First off, I am not trying to start anything with. However I’m trying to understand what you’re saying. In your past comments, you have stated that your father is 12% native and that you’re 1/16(6%), and you’re very proud of that. However to a lot of people 12% would be irrelevant. You on the other hand have been very clear that you father isn’t all the way white nor is he all the way native. So I’m trying to understand how you could be so one-sided with Shailene Woodley. She is known to be part Black, with her percentages unknown to anyone. However you say if anyone who says she is anything other than white is a troll. Why the double standard?

Adamina September 10, 2016 at 10:35 am

@fuzzybear44 Couldn’t have put it better myself

Capricious October 10, 2015 at 11:33 pm

Her mother’s African ancestry must be distant or remote. There’s no way that she has a recent ancestry (say a grandparent) who is African. I think her English and Swiss ancestry are more recent.

byyong83 November 13, 2015 at 7:59 am

How wrong you are! There is every possibility it could be as recent as one of her grandparents.

People can have can have a fully Black grandparent and still look completely white, just look at…Mariah Carey.

DK1x November 15, 2015 at 2:54 pm

Mariah doesn’t look completely white. Faye Reagan looks completely white.

cwm85 November 15, 2015 at 3:42 pm

Mariah looks almost white.

ikeely396 December 30, 2015 at 8:56 pm

Wait….Faye Reagan isn’t completely white? What is she? She looks pretty white to me…Is she like white Cuban like Cameron Diaz or something…

alexgxo September 3, 2016 at 9:48 pm

All of her grandparents don’t look admired at all or very little. And Mariah’s “black” father was also mgm and not fgm as most new worlders.

abbracci October 7, 2015 at 10:36 pm

She doesn’t look Black tbh. She looks pure white.

fuzzybear44 October 8, 2015 at 12:05 am

Well whether she looks it or not, it’s part of who she is. People need to get over that.

Capricious October 10, 2015 at 6:09 pm

Dude, this is a message board. We can comment however we like.

Yes, she looks pure white. Could easily pass a Celtic. Doesn’t mean we’re stripping off her black side. And again, who cares? It’s just a flippin’ comment. Sheez….

Capricious October 10, 2015 at 11:31 pm

Well, you bothered yourself with abbracci and now you even quoted me (yikes relax )…sheez

And who said I don’t care? Obviously I did, otherwise I wouldn’t have commented…?

AW September 9, 2015 at 3:17 pm

I honestly thought she was of Greek ancestry when I first saw her. She looks exactly like girls I know of with Greek ancestry, except she’s prettier. Interesting mix.

cwm85 September 9, 2015 at 5:24 pm

Greek? To me she doesn’t favor greek at all. More English looking, german and swiss…

AW September 9, 2015 at 5:58 pm

I think she could pass in a lot of European countries including places in NW Europe and even southern Europe.

lelo4 September 3, 2015 at 2:22 pm

she’s likely less than 5% black

angrygirl19 October 10, 2015 at 11:13 pm

Clearly someone can’t do their math. If her grandfather is biracial, because clearly these docs describe him as such, she’s automatically 12.5%, then she’s got some additional black heritage from her maternal grandmother who is partially creole. Please do your math before you post your ignorant comment.

alexgxo September 3, 2016 at 9:50 pm

And clearly this person doesn’t know about the one drop rule cause some of her grandparents were “passing” sometimes. One of her grandmothers even had blonde hair which meant that both parents carried the gene thus proving her ssa ancestry is very little.

angrygirl19 March 13, 2017 at 9:28 am

Youre an idiot. If they were black, they were black.since it was on the RECORDS as Black/ african, then CLEARLY they werent able to “pass”. Shut tf up

sparkles180 August 8, 2015 at 2:15 pm

I thought she was Jewish.

cwm85 August 8, 2015 at 4:27 pm

She has no Jewish ancestry.

bakchoyhurl February 6, 2016 at 11:21 am

Keyword: thought

She never stated it as a fact.

Bow Down Bitches August 2, 2015 at 4:52 am

I bet she doesn’t even acknowledge her black ancestry, and I highly doubt she considers herself a woman of color.

cwm85 August 5, 2015 at 2:09 pm

Ummm.. why should she? She is Caucasian. LOL Silly.

hesh123 August 2, 2015 at 4:45 am

She’s not that cute, you can have her if you want her so Damn bad.

musicfangirl July 27, 2015 at 12:23 am

i would have though she would be part Jewish she looks like she could be

cwm85 July 16, 2015 at 3:55 pm

I don’t care what her African percentage is she by no means should be considered mixed. None of her relatives look predominately black. She may have African ancestry but it is very, very low.

andrew July 15, 2015 at 4:12 pm

“White” Brazilians are around 85-90% Europeans, North Americans are almost 100% because one drop rule worked very well

cwm85 July 15, 2015 at 4:14 pm

What do you mean worked very well? One drop rule was a very racist and discriminatory policy and should NOT be or has any place in society today. We have come a lot far from then.

mmessina92 July 16, 2015 at 8:06 am

It does have a place in society which is evident in that Shailene has relatives counted as “black” on the census.

cwm85 July 15, 2015 at 3:08 pm

Her African heritage Is very low lol. Has to be. I bet her African ancestry goes back centuries and they were probably half black only. Has she ever talked about her ancestry, has she ever acknowledge that she has African admixture?

A user July 15, 2015 at 5:19 pm

You’d think she’d noticed her mother was she’s black.

A user July 15, 2015 at 5:20 pm

‘was black’*

M July 15, 2015 at 5:20 pm

??? English, please.

M July 15, 2015 at 5:21 pm

Oh never mind, you corrected yourself. Sorry.

angrygirl19 July 15, 2015 at 7:28 pm

wow, there are apparently a lot of dumb people on this site. did you even read? it goes back to her great grandparents, her grandfather’s parents, who were BOTH half black. and then her grandmother has white, creole, and black heritage. that is NOT centuries back. she obviously has a significant amount of African, and of course white people don’t wanna believe that a pretty girl like her has black blood. she has black blood that is a mere generation or two back. get over it. you do not have to look a certain way to be something. I didn’t know we were still in the 90s -_-

California July 15, 2015 at 8:31 pm

First of all this chick isn’t even anywhere near pretty. Second of all her mom looks white as shit, I highly doubt her mom is even 1 percent black. A lot of people like to make themselves seem interesting and “exotic”. In my eyes this bitch is white.

California July 15, 2015 at 8:32 pm

Her mother is a liar

follers July 15, 2015 at 8:36 pm

How is her mother a liar? Census records list most of Shailene’s mother’s recent ancestors as black or biracial.

A user July 16, 2015 at 6:59 am

“I highly doubt her mom is even 1 percent black”

Is that doubt actually based on anything other than what she looks like?

angrygirl19 July 16, 2015 at 8:46 pm

didn’t you just hear me say you didn’t have to look something. you can look white as shi and be half black. appearances don’t matter. learn to read

A user July 17, 2015 at 1:45 am

Are you responding to me? Because that,s exactly the point i was making against you.

angrygirl19 July 18, 2015 at 9:53 pm

California July 19, 2015 at 12:41 am

Dumbass bitch, I can’t stand your annoying ass. Every time I log on here and I see you writing ignorant bullshit, I almost throw up. You are repulsive and stupid. Please stop writing shit because you are very clueless and ignorant. You think you’re smart but you’re really an idiot. This is why kids need to stay in school.

mmessina92 July 16, 2015 at 8:05 am

No, you’re wrong. In the south, even THREE percent of African ancestry is enough for one to legally be considered black! My mother, grandmother, aunt, myself would all be considered black on the census if we lived back then and I have DNA tested, my African ancestry is 3% at best.

Yet, if you go and look at photos from our family in the late 1800s, you see a lot of people who look mixed-race, and even some of our oldest relatives alive today show traces of African ancestry in their features.

Look at the photos of Shailene Woodley’s relatives linked above. NOT ONE person looks mixed, in the slightest. No one looks African at all. Thus, it is a bad case of the one drop rule.

They’re white people with some degree of black ancestry that made them legally black because white supremacy is a thing and white people with black ancestry were not legally considered white.

mmessina92 July 16, 2015 at 8:05 am

I mean under segregation, not today when I said 1/32 black = legally black.

cwm85 July 16, 2015 at 3:11 pm

So you are saying a 3 percent person with African ancestry is black? Shailene is Not black I don’t care how much African ancestry she has. You saying she is black is outright Outrageous. Her mother doesn’t look mix at all. As pale as shailene. They are white, not mix.

mmessina92 July 16, 2015 at 4:47 pm

No, I am saying her “black” relatives may have been only 3% black since that is all it took to be considered legally black under Jim Crow segregation. A system under which, FYI, I’d be considered black even though I am as white as a snowflake.

mmessina92 May 10, 2015 at 7:00 pm

I’ve seen her mother, grandmother, and photos of all sides of the family and not one of them looks black. AT ALL.

1/64 African was legally “black” on the census, and frankly I think that’s all they have. My great-grandparents were listed as “colored” on the census but they were only like, 1/8 black. I would be surprised if Shailene’s mother had any substantial African ancestry.

Even her relative born in Ibiza, Spain if you follow their genealogy was listed as “black”. What does that tell you?

follers May 10, 2015 at 7:07 pm

Often, when someone was married to a person who was black, they would be listed as black on the census as well. So that would explain the ancestor from Ibiza, Spain being listed as black.

fuzzybear44 May 11, 2015 at 4:41 am

@follers

(Often, when someone was married to a person who was black, they would be listed as black on the census as well.)

I’ve never heard of this before.

fuzzybear44 May 11, 2015 at 4:13 am

@mmessina92

Quote:
(Even her relative born in Ibiza, Spain if you follow their genealogy was listed as “black”. What does that tell you?)

Did you even consider that relative might have actually being black. There were black people peppered all over Spain back in the day. Slavery didn’t end in Spain until 1870. Where do you think all those black people went afterwards. well naturally they went into the larger population. Many of those black people indeed left Spain to seek a better life, and that might be why that ancestor was listed as black.

fuzzybear44 May 11, 2015 at 5:13 am

meant to say (been black

mmessina92 May 11, 2015 at 9:49 am

But there are no people in her family photos who even look slightly mixed, let alone black. They all look white.

I can easily show you photos from 1900 with relatives who are nonwhite, mixed looking. I even have a branch of the family today that still show faint traces of our African ancestry. The same should be true for Shailene Woodley, and it’s not.

I think this is a severe case of the One Drop Rule. Her mom looks Northwest European. Her grandmother who is supposedly Creole looks the same way. Moreover, her “African American” side, there was a census they were listed as white, so very clearly they were able to pass, and were listed “black” other years because anyone with ANY black ancestry was considered such.

In 1930, I’d have been considered “black”, but I look white and no more than a tiny part of my ancestry is African.

It is ridiculous, utterly ridiculous, to consider Woodley to be mixed race. She has one drop of African ancestry, like many white Americans.

abbracci April 3, 2015 at 9:31 am

She looks White. I’m Mexican and I look Blacker than her. Race must be irrelevant.

fuzzybear44 May 11, 2015 at 4:56 am

I think it’s getting to be irrelevant, look at the Lucy and Maria Aylmer( twin sisters)

Looks full English and maybe an admixture of Italian if you want to get more technical…

midori29 March 24, 2015 at 6:16 am

@Dogg, its a false belief that you can always see the African some mixed people don’t exactly show blackness but black people can always tell, most of the time and racist whites. hey may have thicker hair, plumper lips, deep voice, almond eyes, etc. there is always something there. If you want to know who is black ask a racist white, they are skilled at it. Its funny whites claim and defend white looking biracials/multiracials but if blacks claim black looking biracials with their African features blacks are accused of “using the one drop rule”. Or the whites will say that person is good looking because of their white side.

Dogg January 2, 2015 at 7:34 am

Just how much African would she have in her because I’ve seen pictures of her mother and I can hardly see the African.

momo December 28, 2014 at 5:16 pm

These comments in particular had me so riled up I actually made an account just to comment. It’s absolutely ridiculous that some people on this site hold such double standards for some and not others! When ethni celebs said tyra banks is fully black everyone had a problem with it and no one could accept she was mixed with nothing. But as soon as Shaillene Woodley has even an ounce of black in her, it’s proclaimed a lie. Whether you like it or not some of you people are hypocrites and have certain rules for others that you don’t have for yourselves.

midori29 March 23, 2015 at 8:44 pm

Yes whites stick together as long as they are white looking, but whites always like to claim themselves in attractive black people. But let it be the other way around and blacks claiming attractive white people and they go CRAZY. Double standard, the white looking mixed people get a pass over the black looking mixed peoples. But black people always fall for the divide and conquer game. We all know that southern European medittaranean is really a “mixed” population but whites do not admit it.

angrygirl19 December 6, 2014 at 4:32 am

@WTF YOU DID NOT EVER HEAR ME SAY THAT SHE LOOKED BLACK. BEFORE YOU RAISE YOUR IGNORANT ASS VOICE TO ME WHY DON’T YOU LEARN TO READ FIRST. YOU WANT TO BE TRIFLING AND BITCHY, SO THE F$&k CAN I. I NOWHERE IN THAT SENTENCE SAD SHE LOOKED BLACK, YOU STUPID ASS HO. I SAID THAT’S WHAT HER ANCESTRY WAS. AND NO ONE SAID YOU HAD TO ACCEPT HER. IM BLACK AND I PERSONALLY DON’T SEE WHAT THE DAMN PROBLEM IS. YOU NEED TO CALM THE HELL DOWN ANDMGO SOMEWHERE WITH THAT MESS. CALMMTHE F U C K DOWN BITCH BECAUSE NO ONE GOT TIME FOR THAT
STUPID AZZ BITCH

longhaired thick lightskinned gyal December 3, 2014 at 6:13 pm

She’s probably only one percent white, and she’s very below average looking. Didn’t fit the role of Hazel at all, her acting made me cringe forreal.

longhaired thick lightskinned gyal December 3, 2014 at 6:14 pm

LOOOOOOOOL I meant one percent BLACK!!

Dogg December 5, 2014 at 1:40 am

Given that her maternal grandfather is of African-American ancestry, I don’t think so. You should think before you type.

angrygirl19 December 5, 2014 at 4:32 am

Thank you!

WTF December 5, 2014 at 5:06 pm

Dumb bitch, how the fuck you gonna say she looks black? LOL the black community wouldn’t accept this hoe as black. I do not consider her black because she looks like a bland, flat-assed white bitch. She IS NOT black, end of story. I’m so sick of people still clinging to that fucking idiotic ONE DROP RULE. The bitch ain’t black alright?!!?!?!? People with TWO black parents are black.

J.J. December 6, 2014 at 4:45 am

she’s mixed race, so she’s neither black nor white, she’s a combination of the two? why do people get so defensive over people of mixed heritage and try to claim or reject them as one of their own, it doesn’t matter, their ethnicity is there, it’s listed plain and simple, what you “class” them as or choose to “define” them as doesn’t really matter, that’s your opinion based upon your view, keep it to yourself and don’t be so rude and prejudice about it

midori29 March 23, 2015 at 8:46 pm

The media makes it seem like mixed people cant be white looking but they can. There are plenty 25% black African people who look completely white.

Dogg December 5, 2014 at 1:41 am

And she is not “below average looking”. Are you high? Below average means ugly. She is certainly not ugly.

angrygirl19 December 5, 2014 at 4:33 am

Lets also not forget, that alongside the grandfather, her maternal grandmother is mixed with creole, so she has black as well

glenira November 20, 2014 at 9:11 am

Nice mix !!!

White18 September 25, 2014 at 1:12 am

Not everyone in the United states are multiracial. I’m completely white, DNA test taken. Don’t say things you don’t know.

Beautiful mixture!

I would never have guessed her part african-american… wow!
very interesting!

breeeee August 14, 2014 at 10:24 pm

she looks like my cousin and we’re from the same background as her. Just because you have black in you doesn’t mean you look straight up black. Depends on how strong her father’s genes are.

angrygirl19 September 3, 2014 at 1:47 pm

Exactly. Another perfect example of how, if you’re family has been in the US long enough, your roots become mixed up. All Americans are multi racial

angrygirl19 September 3, 2014 at 1:48 pm

The black is from her mothers side. Both of her mothers parents have black ancestry

Alice September 3, 2014 at 9:48 pm

It has nothing to do with how strong her father’s genes are but the percentages. She most likely has 95% European genetics and that’s why she looks the way she does.

Freerk September 11, 2014 at 6:43 pm

What are “European gene(tic)s”? And to that degree? As geneticists found out, the differences in genetic constitution between humans are minimal and may be bigger within a regional population than between what we are used to call “races”. Btw. even a Bonobo has 93,5 to 99,4% the same genes than a human.

Freerk September 11, 2014 at 6:19 pm

Oh yes, the strong genes … I love to imagine the genes of my father doing some workout to be stronger than those of my mother …

yeah she looks completely white

. June 17, 2014 at 11:40 pm

Why the fuck does it matter if she’s black?! You aren’t arguing about the other ethnicities listed! You don’t have to be Alfie Woodard black to be considered black! Look at Troian Bellisario she’s black and she doesn’t even look like it. This site has all the proof you need and you’re like “Waah waah waah! She’s not black! She’s as white as a snokeflake! Waah waah waah!” I don’t give a shit if she looks black or not! This site wasn’t made for complaining about someone’s race, this site was made so you could get some stinkin’ info! Now shut the fuck up and listen to the info they’re giving you. If you’re smart enough you’ll agree with me.

Sully January 20, 2015 at 2:58 pm

That’s just how it is. Some people refuse to believe a person is Black if they look predominately White, even if said person’s own mother or Father was Black. I know a woman who was Black and Louisiana Creole on both sides of her family. But she came out looking White and is often mistaken for being White. When she tries to tell people she’s Black, they refuse to believe her. And this goes both ways. White people refuse to believe she’s Black. And I’ve heard of other people complain how some dark-skinned Black people prefer she not claim herself as Black. Like this girl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VmxflmlcyQ

This girl looks predominately White, but has a Black mother too like the girl above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h8V4qDX6mA

Or this girl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj9hTvtAQRg

Or this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-iHx-pb13g

I think every one of them mentioned how some people of one race or another don’t believe them as being mixed with Black, despite each of them having one Black parent. But like one poster mentions, there seems to be a double standard going on. Because if you go to a lot of light-skin to medium caramel complexion Black actresses’ pages (they even did this on Denzel Washington’s), there’s always someone in the comments saying, they can’t be 100% black. Or they’re probably not as Black as they think they are (less then 50%). But whenever a White-looking person says they have Black ancestry, it’s often refuted as not being true or probably just 1% or less. I don’t know. America is really the only country that practices the 1 drop rule, so Miss Woodley and the people I’ve posted above would not be considered Black in other countries. They’d call them “Mixed,” “Colored,” or “Biracial” if people found out they weren’t just White or European.

midori29 March 23, 2015 at 9:00 pm

@Sully, your post is correct and exactly why black looking biracials tend to claim black because they cannot claim white by appearances. Then white looking biracials tend to claim white or mixed status.
Mariah Carey said it herself that people just cannot believe that her dad is black. Mariah said it on Oprah. The media always presents biracials as black looking when many come out looking white. Many whites do not want to believe that they can come from blacks because some still consider the racist lie that blacks are close to apes, even in 2015.

It probably is that rule, yes. I’m pretty sure that Shailene’s maternal grandparents were “legally black” in the 1950s.

We’re not saying it’s bad if she has African American in her. I have Cape Verdean in me and I know that’s black. I am asking why all available photos of her family members, and I have seen some up to her great great grandparents, show NOT ONE trace of African ancestry on her grandmother’s side. Her grandmother’s side is and looks mostly Spanish and German/Swiss.

Her grandfather’s side probably didn’t look very black either, since Shailene’s mother looks right out of the UK.

angrygirl19 March 29, 2014 at 4:25 pm

Hmmm, my friend is half black half white and she looks like a white girl, straight hair, blue eyes. And how are you able to tell what country exactly her mom came from. She American. You just wanna think you know everything

mmessina92 March 30, 2014 at 10:35 am

Seriously, go look at photos of her ancestors, they are available. When you find that not one relative looks mixed with African descent, it will suggest to you that it might be a very small amount.

angrygirl19 March 30, 2014 at 7:22 pm

You can’t judge what somebody is just by their skin color. What are we in the 50s? These days you can never tell. My friend looks white as hell with straight hair and blue eyes, she’s half black. Yeah, I’ve seen her ancestors, but documents don’t lie. You had people that ‘passed’ for white. Do some research and get your head out of the sixteenth century, she has black. And from the looks of it, not a small amount. ;)

mmessina92 April 1, 2014 at 4:46 pm

No, from the looks of it, it IS a small amount. There is a reason not one of her relatives looks black. Surely it’s not like they just by chance don’t look it.. it means they were classified as such due to the one drop rule, where any amount greater than 1/16 can make you legally black.

I have relatives who looked like hers, who were classified as black too when they came here from Cape Verde. Why? Because of the one drop rule. I have African ancestry but it’s a small amount, just like Shailene Woodley.

Her having African American in her background. Shouldn’t even matter some of y’all should be ashamed of yourself, you sound like a bunch of races assholes. Getting together you guys. I wouldn’t be surprise if any of y’all had any black in your background. Back in slavery white men use to keep black women in there beds. They use to call them there bed wenches. And most of them had babies by there masters.. So therefore don’t be quick to judge cause you could be related to..

. June 17, 2014 at 11:35 pm

Correctamundo

mmessina92 March 25, 2014 at 5:35 pm

This is a horrible case of the one drop rule. When it says her relatives are “black” or “mulatto” on the census it does NOT mean they looked it. Back then if you had any African ancestry you were legally black. Even if it was 1/8.

Her mother looks white, could be Irish or British if you didn’t know.
Her maternal grandmother who someone posted, looks white.
Her great grandfather on the Fauria side of the family looks barely mixed.

I’d like to see her maternal grandfather, I doubt they’d look black. None of her relatives look mixed because their African ancestry is small, insignificant, and exaggerated.

I’ve wondered if she might be related, though, to the football-playing Fauria family (Christian Fauria and his nephew Joseph) from the NFL, though.. that’s a Catalan surname that is not common in US Hispanics or Creoles, so the likelihood of them being related is high. That family does look mixed, though.

mininena April 20, 2014 at 12:37 pm

Lol this is so true

nathaliemk March 14, 2014 at 6:40 pm

I always thought she was English, German, maybe French with a little distant Spanish. But African? She can’t possibly be. Then it has to be that far back in the family, like hundreds of years ago! That girl does not look partially black at all, whatsoever!

angrygirl19 March 15, 2014 at 5:29 pm

Did you actually READ? Did you look at the links? If you did, you would see that it said her black great grandparents existed in 1930. Most definitely NOT ‘hundreds of years ago’. Both her maternal grandparents have black. She has a significant amount of African ancestry. Let it go.

ectag March 16, 2014 at 6:40 am

If her grandparents have black ancestry it’s remote. The term “Creole” doesn’t necessarily mean “part black”; in fact it’s original meaning was simply a French person born in the New World as opposed to France. Creole who are part black typically look white. In Louisiana it’s generally regarded as a euphemism for a person who is mostly white with a remote dollop of black ancestry.

In any event only a crazy person or klansmen would say she has “significant black ancestry”. It’s so thin and dubious it would require a DNA test to confirm. George Bush looks more black than she does.

And in anticipation of politically correct responses, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with being part black. But this woman clearly has at most trace amounts of black ancestry (on the order of what might be found in any arbitrarily selected white person).

angrygirl19 March 16, 2014 at 6:57 am

Her grandfathers mother and father is not at all ‘remote’. And I never said being part creole meant part black. Her grandfather is a mulatto because his parents were black/mulatto. Her grandma also part black.Obviously you need to look up the definition of ‘remote’.

mmessina92 April 17, 2014 at 12:39 am

No, her grandmother is not part black. Her grandmother looks white, and if you go to the family photos you see that her mother and father both look white, as do her father’s parents (who are of mostly Spanish ancestry, if you follow the link you can trace them right back to Ibiza, Spain).

The only black in Shailene Woodley is probably her maternal grandfather, who is probably like 25% African and had the one drop rule applied. It says he was listed as white one year.. would that happen to anyone who LOOKED black? I think not.

follers April 17, 2014 at 2:38 am

Of course her grandmother is part black. Those pages with the pictures list many census records where her ancestors are listed as “Black”/”Mulatto” and so on.

mmessina92 April 19, 2014 at 5:11 pm

^ So? My grandmother is “mulatto” on her birth certificate and the only relative she had who looked black was one grandmother. That was all it took back then.

I looked up Shailene’s relative on the census and even her ancestor directly from Spain was labeled “mulatto”.. Spain is in Europe, so obviously they just called anyone darker than a certain standard “mixed”.

follers April 19, 2014 at 5:25 pm

If a white Spanish ancestor of hers was listed as “Mulatto” or “Colored” on a census, it is because they were living with their “Mulatto” or “Colored” spouse/partner. I’ve seen that happen a few times.

However, if you think random white people were listed as “Mulatto” or “Colored” on U.S. censuses, you’re dreaming.

fuzzybear44 April 20, 2014 at 1:49 am

@mmessina92

That relative may have been exactly what they were listed as.Black people didn’t stay out of spain. The country has always had a black population, now as well as in the past.So it’s very possible that relative was a mulatto

Sully January 20, 2015 at 4:33 pm

To answer your earlier post about Woodley’s grandfather being labeled “White:”

My Great-Great Grandfather was half Western European and half Guinean. They labeled him as White one time on the United States Census in 1870 when he was a child. 10 years later, they labeled him as Black. Add another 10 years and they label him as Mulatto along with his Mulatto wife (of Irish, Creek-Indian, and African descent). By 1920, they labeled him as Black/Negro again. So it happens, and it changes.

And it’s not unheard of for a person who has one black parent or parents who are both biracial to come out looking white. Just like Troian Bellisario, Mariah Carey, or Pete Wentz.

And these average youtubers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VmxflmlcyQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h8V4qDX6mA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hj9hTvtAQRg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-iHx-pb13g

So, they can be about 50% black and come out White-looking too.

On my dad’s side, all my ancestors have been classified as mulatto for the last 100 years. They were mulatto; they married people who were mulatto; they had children who were mulatto who also married people who were mulatto (at least the people I’m directly descendant from). The family still has Black features, yet really light skin (I know I had this Great-Aunt on my paternal Grandfather’s side and growing up, I thought she was White because she was so pale). Anyways, if any one of them had married a fully white person, they probably would have had children just as white looking as Troian Bellisario. You never know. My mom is rather dark and is most likely 90% black -at least, and my sister still came out with light eyes, light skin, and light brown hair with natural blonde highlights. She’s engaged to a half-black, half-Creole guy (who’s often mistaken for Puerto Rican or Latino) who has a half-sister (who’s fully creole) that came out looking White. It makes me wonder what their children will look like seeing as they have about as much Black in them as White and even some Native American ancestry. I’m hoping to get a DNA test done to see how the percentages add up when you test a person descendant from generations of mulattos. The only test I did was on my father and his paternal line and it only shows the White ancestry; giving him the haplogroup of R-U106.

pjatobeth March 24, 2014 at 6:02 am

Uh…just because she doesn’t *look* black doesn’t mean she can have some black in her. I don’t look white and my dad is white (A.K.A. not hundreds of years ago). I’m Jamaican, African-American, German, French, Dutch, American, and Italian. It’s disappointing to see people judging just on someone’s looks.

ectag March 16, 2014 at 6:45 am

It could be that she has a thimble full of black blood. But it’s more likely thus is a politically correct fib. The links prove nothing and she looks whiter than Sean Hannity and George Bush. If she is part black it’s so little you’d need a DNA test to prove it, having zero impact on her phenotype and of interest only to race obsessed liberals and skinheads.

1/8 counted as mulatto. So if she is black, she barely is. You have to be 12% of a race to claim it. I don’t even think she would be 12% then

Dropping Knowledge January 2, 2014 at 9:22 am

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LOOK BLACK TO BE BLACK.

I repeat, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LOOK BLACK TO BE BLACK. Your skin color or features has nothing to do with your blackness. All black people are mixed to some extent thanks to slavery and colonization. Black people come in an infinite number of shades and an infinite number of African and European features. This is America. One drop and you are black, PERIOD. None of these percentages determine blackness either. Either you’re black or you’re not, and Shailene Woodley is black.

taylor January 2, 2014 at 6:43 pm

AMEN thank you!

memphis January 6, 2014 at 10:39 am

Shailene is “Black” if she says that she is. Being “Black” is more than just skin colour. In America it’s the shared cultural experience in music, food, and perseverance over generations of oppression. Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, didn’t look “black” nor did Adam Clayton Powell or Cab Galloway but they identified as black. Shailene has more affinity with Creole culture than identify with “blackness”.

Taylor December 26, 2013 at 12:53 pm

I get so sick of comments like this. Her grandfather is a mulatto, half black, half white, her grandmother is around a quarter black. Her mother is about thirty percent black, therefore that makes Shailene very close to her AFRICAN roots, you can’t tell what someone is just by looking at them so get over it. She is nowhere near two percent so go somewhere with that

mininena April 20, 2014 at 12:45 pm

She’s not “very close to her roots”. SHE IS A WHITE GIRL . If all that stuff is true, she would be 15% black. Which is like the minimum requirement to claim a race. If someone’s 15% black, they’re white to me.

mininena April 20, 2014 at 12:46 pm

Lmaao true .

Aaron Mcdonnell Zellenburg November 15, 2013 at 10:30 pm

I don’t see the black in her at all. Can someone point out one single black feature on this girl?

fuzzybear44 November 16, 2013 at 4:47 am

@Aaron Mcdonnell Zellenburg

You’re dealing with a woman of mix heritage. All those stereotypical features you’re looking for, might not be there. The black parent might have had a Caucasoid phenotype,we do come in more than one look

Taylor November 17, 2013 at 7:14 am

You know as well as the next one that looks mean nothing. She’s about really a quarter black from the look of things. Just eques you don’t SEE it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

mininena April 20, 2014 at 12:48 pm

15% black isn’t a quarter..

angrygirl19 April 21, 2014 at 10:43 am

follers October 24, 2013 at 5:03 am

Shailene’s maternal grandmother – http://www.dianevictor.com/meet_diane.html

mininena April 20, 2014 at 12:47 pm

She looks white too..

J.J. October 22, 2013 at 5:53 pm

correction; her eyes are not greenish brown, they’re a grey-blue with brown around the pupil making the iris a green colour, I strongly advise that if you’re going to fail to listen to my corrections that you look the celebrity up on google images and zoom into their eye colour and see for yourself.

notional October 23, 2013 at 9:35 pm

Wrong, I just looked a large pic of her and her eyes are green with brown around the pupil or simply ‘Hazel’

follers October 23, 2013 at 9:46 pm

Sooooo…. perhaps we should simply delete the eye/hair color option from this site?

ethnic October 24, 2013 at 3:47 am

seriously, take it easy guys. color is quite subjective and debatable. It is not the main objective of this site.

J.J. October 24, 2013 at 7:56 am

I don’t think deleting the eye/hair colour options is necessary/wise and national you’re incorrect her eyes contain no actual green colouration, they’re grey/blue with a significant amount of brown around the pupil making them appear to be green, and even if they were actually green with brown around the pupil that would still fail to classify as hazel they’d then be considered forest green (green+brown) as true hazel eyes are just a light golden brown colour resembling a hazelnut, please get your facts straight before commenting

fuzzybear44 June 22, 2013 at 4:39 am

@Follers

I think this person is just trying to start something

andrew September 20, 2013 at 6:51 pm

I dont think the AA community claims her

fuzzybear44 September 21, 2013 at 10:37 am

@andrew

(I dont think the AA community claims her)

Claims her?man she’s not our lost luggage. She doesn’t go around yelling I’m part black, look at me,that how people pass as white. Also what this deal about claiming people?I don’t claim any celeb or anybody,if they’re not my family.I don’t see any white claiming Chris Rock,or blair underwood, their both part white.

andrew September 21, 2013 at 12:24 pm

I just said a fact: ethnic minorities who claim celebs as part of their people

mininena April 20, 2014 at 12:49 pm

15% black isn’t mixed to me. I would just consider that person white.

gndg March 24, 2013 at 8:35 pm

she don’t look american

rickyflo April 14, 2013 at 7:51 am

How is American supposed to look??? If ya can’t answer that, ya are contradicting and she looks just as more American than ever, and Americans are different groups of people, not just particularily yours or one group!

fuzzybear44 March 15, 2013 at 4:52 am

@follers
(I think Shailene looks blacker than Anatole Broyard’s daughter)

Well it is possible

(It is amusing that she is playing Mary Jane Watson)
About the same as Dean Cain playing Superman,he’s 25% Japanese. What’s really amusing,is that their upset some english guy is playing him now.

Affellay January 5, 2013 at 9:05 am

well, she doesnt seem Black 2 me. How much African blood she has in percent?

yoyoyo7 March 6, 2013 at 5:11 am

basically, her Mom is 62.5% White/European and 37.5% Black/African and her dad is White/European… so she is about 82% White/European and 18% Black/African… so since she’s mostly European, her race is White (and Black is just counting as a distant ancestry, just like White is an ancestry pretty distant going down the bloodline of most Black/African Americans)

fuzzybear44 March 15, 2013 at 4:01 am

@yoyoyo7

First lets make this clear, that I’m not attacking you.So if you do reply,no need for any hostility

Now I’m saying there are to many unknown variables, for you to come up with 18% on the money.
1.Your operating on the assumption that the European paternal grandparents ,as well as Maguerite Lois Davis were 100% white. We already know that 33% whites americans are 2 to 20% avg black. Now according to Dna experts who are testing white Europeans, they say Europeans are avg 3 to 8% black.I’m not saying that case, but it is an unknown factor, that could put your calculation off(btw the 3 to 8% is what the experts say,not me.So anyone who doesn’t like it,take it up with them)
2.Your dealing with Creoles and Mulattoes, there is no way to tell how those combos were broken down(50/50,60/40,55/45 etc). Therefore again these are unknown factors

In my opinion,18 to 25% would be a safer bet

yoyoyo7 March 16, 2013 at 1:57 am

I didn’t get it as an attack ;)
Well I said if the parents were Mulatto, but yeah, somewhere between 18 to 25%, not more :D

mininena April 20, 2014 at 12:51 pm

She’s 15% if you do the math..

Anita March 10, 2013 at 4:36 pm

You don’t judge black blood exclusively by how a person looks. She doesn’t appear Hispanic either but there is a little there.

yoyoyo7 March 13, 2013 at 10:48 am

First of all: Hispanic is not a race it’s a culture – people that come from a Spanish speaking country are the so called Hispanics, and original Hispanics were White since they were only Spaniards, but that changed when those Spaniards settled in Middle and South America. Most Hispanics there are White as well (40 to 45% without the Hispanics in the USA) but they are followed by the Mestizo’s (half White (Spanish, Italian or any other ethnicity), half NA or instead of NA Asian) and then Blacks and NA with some Asians as well. So what the hell do you mean with the looking Hispanic when you can’t fucking look Hispanic!? The Hispanic that she has in her is White Hispanic or Spanish as in the southern country of Europe!
Second: I wasn’t judging by her looks, I was using math actually. Read the fucking description before you write anything. You’ve read the listed ethnicities only, but you should read the background story as well. That part tells you a lot more because she could be Euroafrican (Mulatto – no offence) claiming only by the listed ethnicities!
Thanks for reading and read more about Hispanic people before you comment, because they’re laughing at your stupid comments on this website here just so you know :)

rickyflo April 14, 2013 at 8:25 am

And my pal yo yo yo67, also, Spaniard did not only travel to Middle and South America. They were also in the North American region also, and in fact there should not be such a prejudicism and census of Hispanic as much as it would be today because we have had Hispanics in the civil war, navy’s highest positions, literature, movies, and even proved things that we live by today in schooling, hospitals, sciences, and so on. In fact, there should be a ethnicity census on Italian, Spaniard, Latino, German, Irish, Japanese, Jewish, and Gypsy heavily because those are judged the same way sometimes a Hispanic. I am not saying be prejudice. Let’s be equal at some point to get out of this stupidity and prejudice the ethnicities equally. Some places are thinking now Spaniards and Italians are not at all white and they are, through proven gene history of Europe widespread. That is what makes a Caucasian theory. In fact I am surprised that there is not Jewish and Irish added on there.

rickyflo April 14, 2013 at 8:10 am

Anita, Also she may have the heritage but it is not her race and may not be her ethnicity either. She has to be taught ethnicity no matter the result to be that, and the way this is, she I dont believe is close to that ethnicity being taught. Anyhow, she has the same equal factors of other heritages and ethnicities. However, her heritages and certain ethnicity are given at the same equality, prejudices of one race, and taught in culture.

Example A
Italian 50
Mexican 12.5
English 37.5
Born America
Family Ethnicity- Italian, English
Which?
Race White
Ethnicity- Italian-English-American
He is not at all hispanic by census and culture, so therefore is not Hispanic
Example B
Italian 12.5
Spaniard 75
Mexican 12.5

Family Ethnicity- Spaniard
Which?
Race- White
Ethnicity- Spaniard-American, may not be precisely Hispanic because of precise culture including into Spain only. Others included Hispanic
————————————————
That is how everything can be different, but it takes knowing and learning..

Anita March 10, 2013 at 5:07 pm

How do you eugenicist divide blood?

AllyG.Rdz13 December 15, 2012 at 5:30 pm

She’s very pretty! I kinda have the same ethnicity as her Spanish, German, French & am probably African too(: but except I’m Mexican also.

Jessica-Tere October 22, 2012 at 1:02 pm

Very pretty girl

me October 31, 2012 at 10:27 am

She looks White

fuzzybear44 October 31, 2012 at 5:36 pm

Come on now,you have been on this site long enough. You know you can look one way,and yet still have other bloodlines in you

me November 1, 2012 at 5:21 am

I agree, but I would not have imagined that Shailene Woodley, Rebecca Hall and Troian Bellisaro was part Black and Steven R. Mcqueen was part Asian, this is interesting.

fuzzybear44 November 1, 2012 at 5:56 am

Well I know it’s not your fault, most people in the past as well as now hid that heritage. Also that most people have been taught that if you have said bloodline, you have to look a certain way.So if people like yourself don’t see certain traits, why would you imagine it.

andrew March 6, 2013 at 4:20 pm

pretty clear..

GeorgeJeanPierre October 20, 2012 at 7:29 pm

shes mixed good for her. Im gonna go eat some food now
