Sal Mineo was an American actor. He was known for his roles in the films Rebel Without a Cause, Crime in the Streets, Giant, Exodus, The Longest Day, Cheyenne Autumn, and Escape from the Planet of the Apes. He was nicknamed “The Switchblade Kid.”

He was the son of Josephine (Alvisi) and Salvatore Mineo, who were coffin makers. His father was born in Messina, Sicily, Italy. His mother was born in New York, to Italian parents.
