Robert Menzies was an Australian politician. He served as Prime Minister of Australia, from 26 April, 1939 to 29 August, 1941, and again, from 19 December, 1949 to 26 January, 1966. He was also Attorney-General of Victoria, from 19 May, 1932 to 24 July, 1934, Deputy Premier of Victoria, from 19 May, 1932 to 24 July, 1934, Leader of the United Australia Party, from 26 April, 1939 to 29 August, 1941, and again from 23 September, 1943 to 31 August, 1945, Leader of the Opposition, from 23 September, 1943 to 19 December, 1949, and Leader of the Liberal Party, from 31 August, 1945 to 26 January, 1966, among other duties.

Prime Minister Menzies was the son of Kate (Sampson) and James Menzies, who served as a member of the Victorian Parliament for Lowan, from 16 November, 1911 to 21 October, 1920. His parents were both born in Ballarat, Victoria, his father to Scottish parents and his mother to Cornish parents.

Prime Minister Menzies’ paternal grandparents were Robert Menzies (the son of James Menzies and Catherine Bell) and Elizabeth Band (the daughter of Robert Band and Isabella Cunningham).

Prime Minister Menzies’ maternal grandparents were John Sampson (the son of John Sampson and Catherine Williams) and Mary Jane Organ (the daughter of John Organ and Mary Pidwell Blake).
