I read an article on Wikipedia that the guy running the game had a great distaste for Americans and had no problem slapping his face. One guy the casting crew wanted to play the part could not bring himself to slap DeNiro so they got the guy in the scene, also, DeNiro told the director to have the guard slap Walken before his scene[unbeknownst to Walken] so his reaction was genuine...pretty interesting.
