Richard Lugar was an American politician and soybean and tree farmer. A Republican, he served as Mayor of Indianapolis, from January 1, 1968 to January 1, 1976, and a U.S. Senator from Indiana, from January 3, 1977 to January 3, 2013.

He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1996.

Richard was the son of Bertha Isabelle (Green) and Marvin Leroy Lugar.

He was married to Charlene Smeltzer, until his death. The couple has four children.

Richard’s paternal grandfather was Riley Webster Lugar (the son of Joseph Lugar and Mary Ann Hays). Riley was born in Indiana. Joseph was the son of Joseph Lugar, who was of German descent, and of Mary Wilson. Richard’s great-grandmother Mary Ann was the daughter of William H./Nelson Hayes and Sarah Underwood.

Richard’s paternal grandmother was Clara Belle McVicker (the daughter of Samuel McVicker and Rosetta Anna Owen). Clara was born in Indiana. Samuel was the son of David McVicker and Margaret I. Jonas. Rosetta was the daughter of John L. Owen and Phebe Macy.

Richard’s maternal grandfather was Thomas Luther Green (the son of Cornelius Green and Rhoda Isabelle Wilson). Thomas was born in Indiana. Rhoda was the daughter of Hugh D. Wilson, who was born in Renfro, Scotland, and of Amy Harrison.

Richard’s maternal grandmother was Anna C. Hoereth (the daughter of Jonathan George Hoereth and Wilhelmina Topp). Anna was born in Indiana.
