Rebecca Lobo is an American women’s basketball player and television basketball analyst. She was a great college player.

Rebecca is the daughter of RuthAnn and Dennis Joseph Lobo. She is married to journalist, sportswriter, and novelist Steve Rushin, with whom she has four children.

Rebecca’s paternal grandfather was of Cuban/Spanish-Cuban and Spanish descent, while Rebecca’s paternal grandmother was of Ashkenazi Jewish and Polish (Catholic) ancestry. Rebecca’s mother’s ancestry is Irish and German.

A DNA test taken by the show Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2014) stated that Rebecca’s genetic ancestry is:

The DNA test stated that 10.7% of Rebecca’s DNA is Eastern European, and that 10.2% of Rebecca’s DNA is Ashkenazi Jewish.

Rebecca’s paternal grandfather was Joseph M. Lobo, Jr. (the son of Joseph Mario Lobo Perez and Maria Emilia Guitterez). Rebecca’s great-grandfather Joseph was born in Pinar del Río, Cuba, the son of Jose Maria Lobo and Vincenta Perez. Rebecca’s great-grandmother Maria Guitterez was born in Tangier, Morocco, the daughter of Spanish parents, Antonio Guitterez and Catalina Roca.

Rebecca’s paternal grandmother was Catherine M. Wade (“Wade” was the surname of her stepfather). Catherine’s mother, Mary Olech, was a Polish (Catholic) immigrant from Galicia. Catherine’s biological father, Rebecca’s great-grandfather, was unknown. On the genealogy series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. (2014), DNA testing suggested that Catherine’s biological father was likely of Ashkenazi Jewish background.

Rebecca’s maternal grandfather is James Joseph Peter McLaughlin (the son of Peter Vincent McLaughlin and Julia/Jule E. Ayers). Rebecca’s great-grandfather Peter was the son of James McLaughlin and Mary Jones. Julia was the daughter of William Ayers, who was born in Pennsylvania, to Irish parents, and of Elizabeth Grout/Godut, who was also born in Pennsylvania, to an Irish father.

Rebecca’s maternal grandmother is Ruth Caroline Sauer (the daughter of Peter Sauer and Rose Teresa Klinges). Peter was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Peter Sauer, who was from Bavaria/Bayern, Germany, and of Louisa Goerlitz, who was also of German origin. Rose was also born in Pennsylvania, to a German father, Henry Klinges, and a mother, Madeline “Lena” Helfrich, who was also of German origin.

    Rebecca Lobo’s DNA testing showed hidden Ashkenazi Jewish roots. What I found from watching that episode again is she also has very remote Sub Saharan African roots.
