Ralph Northam is an American physician and politician. He is a military veteran. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Governor of Virginia, from January 13, 2018 to January 15, 2022. He was previously Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, from January 11, 2014 to January 13, 2018.

Ralph is the son of Nancy B. Shearer, a nurse, and Wescott B. Northam, a three-term Commonwealth’s Attorney for Accomack County, and then an appointed Circuit Court judge for Accomack and Northampton counties; his own father was a judge in the same court. Ralph is married to Pam, with whom he has two children.

Ralph was raised on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, and grew up on a water-side farm, outside Onancock, Virginia, where his family grew crops and tended livestock on their seventy-five-acre (30 ha) property.

Ralph’s paternal grandfather was Judge Thomas Long Northam (the son of Levi Jacob Northam and Mary Grace Leppincott Long). Thomas was born in Virginia, and was a Circuit Court judge for Accomack and Northampton counties. Levi was the son of James Northam and Rosey A. Dix.

Ralph’s paternal grandmother was Ida Mae Brownlee (the daughter of John Erwin Brownlee and Cora Celestia Holland). Ida was born in South Carolina. Cora was the daughter of Asbury Morgan Epps Holland and Margaret Elizabeth Sherard.

Ralph’s maternal grandfather was Dr. Joseph Pardoe Shearer (the son of Charles R. Shearer and Mary Jane Pardoe). Joseph was born in Pennsylvania. Charles was the son of Hiram R. Shearer and Eleanor Ann Crawford.

Ralph’s maternal grandmother was named O’Neill Byrd. O’Neill was born in Virginia.
