R. Budd Dwyer was an American politician. He committed suicide by gunshot during a press conference, while in office as Treasurer, the day before his sentencing for a bribery conviction. A Republican, he served as Treasurer of Pennsylvania from January 20, 1981 to his death, and was previously a Member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, from January 5, 1965 to November 30, 1968, and again, from January 7, 1969 to November 30, 1970; and a Member of the Pennsylvania Senate, from January 5, 1971 to January 20, 1981.

He was the son of Alice Mary (Budd) and Robert Malcolm Dwyer. He was married to Joanne Grappy, until his death, with whom he had two children.

Budd’s paternal grandfather was Dr. Charles Sumner Dwyer (the son of The Rev. William Henry Harrison Dwyer and Mary Joselyn Greenleaf). Charles was born in Pennsylvania. The Rev. William was born in Vermont, and was a Baptist minister. He was the son of The Rev. Jeremiah H. Dwyer, who was also a Baptist minister, and of Electa/Electra “Lucy” Harlow. Mary was the daughter of William Josephus Greenleaf and Esther Calkins.

Budd’s paternal grandmother was Edna Winta Teeter (the daughter of William K. Teeter and Margaret B. Watson). Edna was born in Pennsylvania.

Budd’s maternal grandfather was Horace Franklin Budd (the son of William Prower Budd and Mary Ann Jane Ham). Horace was born in Pennsylvania, to parents from Cornwall, England. William was born in Bridgerule, the son of John Budd and Elizabeth Rogers. Mary Ann was born in Launcells, the daughter of John M. Ham and Mary Wicket/Wickett.

Budd’s maternal grandmother was Jessie Melissa Goodenaugh/Goodenough (the daughter of Linas/Linus North Goodenough/Goodnough and Alice Gertrude Day). Jessie was born in Pennsylvania. Linus was the son of Truman Herbert Goodenough and Hannah Wheeler Torrey.
