Phil Murphy is an American financier, diplomat, and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been Governor of New Jersey, since January 16, 2018. He has also been U.S. Ambassador to Germany, from September 3, 2009 to August 26, 2013, and Vice Chair of the National Governors Association, since July 8, 2021.

He is the son of Dorothy Louise (Dunton) and Walter F. Murphy. He is married to political activist, real estate financial analyst, and politician Tammy (Snyder) Murphy, with whom he has four children.

Phil’s paternal grandfather was John William Murphy (the son of Philip Murphy and Mary Doherty). John was born in Massachusetts, to Irish parents.

Phil’s paternal grandmother was Eleanor Murphy (the daughter of Edmund Murphy and Mary Foley). Eleanor was born in Ireland.
