Phil Gramm is an American economist and politician. He was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas, from January 3, 1979 to January 3, 1985, and a U.S. Senator from Texas, from January 3, 1985 to November 30, 2002. He switched his affiliation from Democratic to Republican in 1983.

He was a candidate for the Republican Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1996.

He is the son of Florence (Scroggins) and Kenneth Marsh Gramm. He is married to Wendy Lee Gramm, an economist and scholar, with whom he has two children. Wendy is of Korean and Native Hawaiian descent.

Phil’s paternal grandfather was George Gramm (the son Frederick Louis Gramm and Caroline Hanst). George was born in New York, to German parents.

Phil’s paternal grandmother was named Eleanor Louisa Smith (the daughter of Mary Jane). Eleanor was born in New York.

Phil’s maternal grandfather was Josephus Scroggins (the son of William Henry Scroggins and Sanny Dawkins). Sanny was the daughter of Alexander Dawkins and Nancy Ann Greene.

Phil’s maternal grandmother was named Catherine “Katia” Jones.
