Paulo is the son of Lygia (Araripe) and Pedro Paulo Queima Coelho de Souza. He has Portuguese ancestry, and some of his roots can be traced back to Aveiro, Portugal. Paulo is married to artist Christina Oiticica.

Paulo’s paternal grandfather was José Marcos Coêlho de Souza (the son of João Marcos Coêlho de Souza and Josepha Cupertino Lima).

Paulo’s paternal grandmother was Maria Crescencia Dos Santos Queima (the daughter of José Francisco dos Santos Queima and Celia).
