Patty Murray is an American politician and educator. A member of the Democratic Party, she has served as a U.S. Senator from Washington, since January 3, 1993, and President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, since January 3, 2023. She was previously Secretary of the Senate Democratic Conference, from January 3, 2007 to January 3, 2017, and Senate Assistant Democratic Leader, from January 3, 2017 to January 3, 2023, among other duties.

Patty is the daughter of Beverly A. (McLaughlin) and David Linn Johns. She is married to Rob Murray, with whom she has two children.

Patty’s paternal grandfather was named William Elias Johns. William was born in Iowa, to Welsh parents.

Patty’s paternal grandmother was Emma Blanche Linn (the daughter of William Albert Linn and Susan Mabel Pierson). Emma was born in North Dakota. William was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Andrew Linn and Ruth Ann Baily. Susan was the daughter of Johnathan Pierson and Elizabeth Dugdale.

Patty’s maternal grandfather was Ralph Davis McLaughlin (the son of George Davis McLaughlin and Anna McLellan Shell). Ralph was born in Ohio. George was the son of Davis McLaughlin and Mary A. Stiles. Anna was the daughter of Daniel C. M. Shell and Mary J.

Patty’s maternal grandmother was Bertha Alice Quigley (the daughter of Hugh Quigley and Philomena/Philomene/Phoebe Ducharme). Bertha was born in Minnesota. Hugh was born in Perth, Lanark, Ontario, Canada, to Irish parents, Bryan Quigley and Margaret Ryan. Philomena was born in Huron, Ontario, Canada, to French-Canadian parents, Joseph Elie Charron Ducharme and Emerance/Merance Aure Guerard/Girard, from Québec.
