Patrick Dempsey is an American actor and auto racer. His roles include the films Heaven Help Us, Meatballs III: Summer Job, Can’t Buy Me Love, In the Mood, Some Girls, Loverboy (1989), Coupe de Ville, Mobsters, Run (1991), Bank Robber, With Honors, Outbreak, Hugo Pool, Scream 3, Sweet Home Alabama, The Emperor’s Club, Brother Bear 2, in voice performance; Freedom Writers, Enchanted, Made of Honor, Valentine’s Day (2010), Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Flypaper, Bridget Jones’s Baby, the sequel Disenchanted, Ferrari, and Thanksgiving (2023); the series Grey’s Anatomy and Devils; the mini-series JFK: Reckless Youth, A Season in Purgatory, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1997), and The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair; and the made-for-tv movies A Fighting Choice, Jeremiah, Crime and Punishment (1998), and Lucky 7. He collects sports and vintage cars, and has competed at 24 Hours of Le Mans, Rolex 24 at Daytona, and the Ensenada SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race.

Patrick is the son of Amanda, a school secretary, and William Dempsey, an insurance salesman. His father was born William Allen Schlossnagle, and took the surname of his own stepfather John W. Dempsey. He was raised in the tiny towns of Turner and Buckfield, near Lewiston. Patrick is married to hairstylist and makeup artist Jillian Fink, with whom he has three children.

He was selected People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2023.

Patrick’s paternal grandfather was Asa B. Schlossnagle (the son of Adam William Schlossnagle and Edith V. Friend). Asa was born in Maryland. Adam was born in Maryland, the son of German parents, Christoph Schlossnagle and Cooney Cunnigunda. Edith was the daughter of Isaiah Friend and Julia A. Casteel.

Patrick’s paternal grandmother was Jane Devonshire (the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Devonshire and Lydia Jennette “Nettie” Mattson). Jane was born in Maryland. Benjamin was the son of Benjamin Devonshire and Ellen Montgomery. Lydia was the daughter of James Mattson and Elizabeth Mary Carroll.

Patrick’s maternal grandfather was John Leroy Casson (the son of George Anthony Casson and Ida Butler). John was born in New York. George was born in Kendal, Westmorland, England. Ida was born in Massachusetts, the daughter of James B. Butler, who was born in London, England, and of Isabelle/Isabella Ross Ogilvie, whose parents were Canadian.

Patrick’s maternal grandmother was Margaret E. Grubb (the daughter of J. Wesley Grubb and Sarah/Sallie Jane Cass). Margaret was born in Pennsylvania. J. Wesley was the son of Amos Grubb and Charlotte Hook. Sarah was the daughter of George W. Cass and Amanda C. McVaugh.

Patrick’s matrilineal line can be traced to Silindra Clinda Hansell, who was born c. 1818, and to her mother, Mary Sehman.

    I’d say he has some Irish ancestry after all. Carroll is definitely an Irish surname and also most Butlers have Irish ancestry.

      Carroll is an Irish surname. Butler is in Ireland since an Anglo Norman invasion in the 12th century and most Butlers are of Irish descent now.

      Interesting though again that another with such an Irish surname, or surname form the British Isles, never had ancestry there. Mickey Rooney, Hulk Hogan, Eddie Murphy, etc. and so many more with Irish surnames where the names were taken somewhere along the line for different reasons as they are more adaptable and acceptable in the USA.

    On his “Friend” line Patrick Dempsey has at least 1/256 Lenape/Delaware Native American ancestry through Karrenhappuck Hyatt. He also has more distant Native American and Finnish ancestry
