Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, and playwright. He is known as one of the most influential artists in history and as the founder of the Cubist movement.

Pablo was the son of Maria Picasso y López and Don José Ruiz y Blasco. He was married to Russian ballet dancer Olga Khokhlova, until her death, and to his muse, French-born Jacqueline Roque, until his death. He had a son with Olga; a daughter, Maya Widmaier-Picasso, with French model Marie-Thérèse Walter; and two children, photographer and cinematographer Claude Picasso and fashion designer and businessperson Paloma Picasso, with French painter, art critic, and author Françoise Gilot.

He spent most of his life in France.

Pablo was sometimes said to have had Romani ancestry. It is not clear if this is accurate.

Pablo’s paternal grandfather was Diego Ruiz de Almoguera (the son of José Ruiz de Fuentes and Maria Josefa de Almoguera). Pablo’s grandfather Diego was born in Cordova, Cordova, Andalusia, Spain. Pablo’s great-grandparents José and Maria were born in Valladolid, Spain.

Pablo’s paternal grandmother was Maria de la Paz Blasco Echevarría (the daughter of José Blasco Gil and Antonia Echevarría Cortes). Pablo’s grandmother Maria was born in Malaga, Malaga, Andalusia, Spain. Pablo’s great-grandfather José was born in Málaga, Spain. Blasco can be a Basque surname, and José’s paternal grandfather lived in Navarra, Spain, so José may have had som Basque ancestry. Pablo’s great-grandmother Antonia was born in Málaga, Spain, to a Basque father and a Spanish mother.

Pablo’s maternal grandfather was Francisco Picasso Guardeño (the son of Tommaso Picasso Musante and Maria Guardeño). Pablo’s grandfather Francisco was born in Malaga, Malaga, Andalusia, Spain. Tommaso was born, c. 1787, in Sori, Province of Genoa, Liguria, Italy, and was a merchant. He was the son of Giovanni Battista Picasso, born in Sori, and of Isabella Musante, born in Quinto, now a quarter of Genoa. Tommaso moved to Spain in 1807, and married Pablo’s Spanish great-grandmother, María, in 1812. Maria was born in Cabra, Cordova, Andalusia, Spain, the daughter of Manuel Guardeno Deff and Maria Garcia Parra.

Pablo’s maternal grandmother was named Inés María López Robles. Inés was born in Malaga, Malaga, Andalusia, Spain.

Many articles say he was proud of his Roma heritage, but how true is it that he had Romani ancestry?

    “Echevarria” is typical Basque surname:

Pablo’s father is sometimes referred as “de origen vasco” in Spanish sites, so he likely had some Basque ancestry.

“Picasso” surname is Italian. Tommaso Picasso (his great-grandfather), a merchant, was born, c. 1787, in Sori, Province of Genoa, Liguria, Italy, to Giovanni Battista Picasso, born in Sori, and Isabella Musante, born in Quinto (now a quarter of Genoa). Giovanni Battista Picasso was the son of Tommaso Picasso and Anna Maria Fasce.
Pablo’s great-grandfather Tommaso Picasso moved to Spain around 1807, and he married Maria Luisa Guardeño Garcia in 1812.
