Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was a Turkish field marshal, revolutionary statesman, and author. He is the founding father of the Republic of Turkey, and was the first President of Turkey, from 29 October, 1923 to 10 November, 1938, his death. He was also Speaker of the Grand National Assembly, from 24 April, 1920 to 29 October, 1923, Prime Minister of the Government of the Grand National Assembly, from 3 May, 1920 to 24 January, 1921, and Leader of the Republican People’s Party, from 9 September, 1923 to 10 November, 1938. Regarded as one of the most important leaders of the 20th century, he was a progressive reformer, who modernized and secularized the Turkish state, turning it into an industrial nation. His policies were known as Kemalism. He was also known as Mustafa Kemal Pasha, Ghazi Mustafa Kemal, Kemal Atatürk, Kamâl Atatürk, and K. Atatürk.

He was the son of Zübeyde Hanım and Ali Rıza Efendi, a militia officer, title-deed clerk, and lumber trader. His father’s family was from Kodžadžik, Centar Župa Municipality, near the border to Albania, today North Macedonia. His mother was from Langadas, Thessaloniki. His sister was Makbule Atadan. His family was Muslim. Mustafa Kemal adopted thirteen children.

His second name Kemal was given to him by his mathematics teacher.

His father is thought to have been of Albanian origin by some authors. However, it is not clear if this is accurate. His mother was said to be of Yörük ancestry, according to Şevket Süreyya Aydemir. However, it is not clear if this is accurate either. There are also some suggestions about the possibility of him having had some degree of Slavic and/or Jewish origin. However, it is unclear if this ancestry has been verified/documenated.

Mustafa Kemal’s paternal grandfather was named Kırmızı/Kizil Hafız Ahmet Efendi (the son of Ahmet/Arslanlar Efendi).

Mustafa Kemal’s maternal grandfather was named Sofizade Feyzullah Efendi Feyzullah (the son of İbrahim Ağa). İbrahim was the son of Hacı Abdullah Ağa.

Mustafa Kemal’s maternal grandmother was named Güzel Ayşe Hanım.
