Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet. His best-known works are the sculptures Pietà and David, and the frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. He was part of the High Renaissance period.

Michelangelo was the son of Francesca di Neri del Miniato di Siena and Ludovico di Leonardo Buonarroti Simoni.

Revolutionist Philippe Buonarroti was a descendant by some degree of Michelangelo’s family.

Michelangelo’s paternal grandfather was Leonardo di Buonarrota Simoni (the son of Bonarrota Simoni and Selvaggia de’Rossi). Bonarrota was the son of Buonarrota Simoni. Selvaggia was the daughter of Antonio de’Rossi.

Michelangelo’s paternal grandmother was named Alessandra Brunacci (the daughter of Brunaccio Brunacci).

Michelangelo’s maternal grandfather was named Neri o Serra/del Sera (the son of Miniato o Serra/del Sera).

Michelangelo’s maternal grandmother was named Maria Bonda Rucellai.
