Michael Aris was an English historian. He was the husband of Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi, to whom he was married until his death. His father, John Arundel Aris, was an English officer, with the British Council. His mother, Josette Marie-Émilie de Guise (Vallancourt), was French-Canadian, and also of 1/16 English and 1/16 Scottish descent. Michael had two children with Aung, including activist Alexander Aris.

Michael’s paternal grandfather was Herbert Aris (the son of John Aris and Elizabeth Whitton). Herbert was born in Weedon Lois, Northamptonshire, England. John was the son of John Aris and Mary. Elizabeth was the daughter of William Whitton and Elizabeth Wakefield.

Michael’s paternal grandmother was Sydney Dorothy Arundel (the daughter of John Thomas Arundel and Eliza Eleanor “Lillie” Whibley). Sydney was born on Manra Island, Kiribati. John was the son of Richard Lockwood Arundel and Mary Izod. Eliza was the daughter of Ambrose Whibley and Ann Parks.

Michael’s maternal grandfather was Émile Vaillancourt (the son of Janvier-Arthur Vaillancourt and Marie-Émilie de Guise). Janvier-Arthur was the son of Jacques Vaillancourt and Josephte Paquette. Michael’s great-grandmother Marie-Émilie was the daughter of François de Guise and Léonore-Mélina Barbeau.

Michael’s maternal grandmother was Blanche Jeannotte (the daughter of Herménégilde Jeannotte and Emily Victoria Marie Clerk). Herménégilde was the son of Herménégilde Jeannotte and Marie-Libéré Tetreau. Emily was the daughter of George Edward Clerk and Marie Louise Elizabeth Dupuis. George’s parents, Sir George Clerk, 6th Baronet, and Maria Anne Law, were Scottish and English, respectively.
